MGC proudly recognises International Women’s Day (IWD), which is globally celebrated on 8 March each year. This year we are dedicating Wednesday 15th of March as our day of celebration. A key part of our festivities is recognising the incredible contributions of our younger generation; the young women and girls around the world who are standing up for their rights, and leading the way towards a more equal, unified, and resilient future. At Melbourne Girls’ College we will commemorate the day with several events: one being our International Women’s Day Breakfast. It is also a time to reflect on progress, to call for change and to celebrate the courage and determination of the women who changed history. MGC will embrace this day with our whole heart.

Two weeks ago, just before our swimming sports we celebrated our first whole school assembly for the 2023 college year. This was a special opportunity to reflect on our start to the academic year and to also present our 2023 student leadership team to the college. During my address, I spoke about leadership being more than a title or a position, rather it is an action, and that great student leadership is anchored in several key traits including care and compassion, service to others, strong communication, honesty, and selflessness.

Over my time in education and in my privileged position, I have seen many student leaders who have not just led at their best, they have lived at their best and understood that to lead others effectively, you first must lead within yourself. I spoke about there being no right or wrong path and there are many ways to lead indeed, as long as you are always true to yourself and know that one person alone has power; but collectively we can have the greatest impact.

We are excited for what our 2023 student leadership team will bring and we congratulate them on their service to MGC this year.

We look forward to welcoming our new School Council Members at our next meeting on 21 March 2023. On behalf of MGC we express our sincere gratitude to our outgoing college council members for their service. We are grateful for their guidance, dedicated time, and energy to help map our past, present, and future. We acknowledge the service of the following MGC Council members:

  • Rachel Robertson – DET Representative
  • Louella Breach – Student Representative
  • Ana Sofia Schaefer – Student Representative

Special mention to our outgoing College Council President, Heather Pritchard. She has been a member of the MGC Council since 2018. In her time. Heather accepted the position of Vice President, has been an active member on the Finance Committee and successfully held the position of School Council President since 2019. During the pandemic and successive principal appointments, Heather provided MGC consistent and thoughtful guidance and her behind the scenes work has been integral to the growth across the college. We have appreciated her dedication, insight, and advocacy over this time.
