WINTER CONCERT
Our annual Winter Concert is to be held at the Robert Blackwood Hall on Wednesday 10 August. Rehearsals are well and truly underway. This is always an impressive occasion and a highlight on the school calendar!
I encourage parents, grandparents and friends to attend and celebrate together the showcase of musical talent of our students.
Tickets are on sale via a link on the McKinnon Secondary College website: www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au
I thank the music team for their efforts and look forward to a very successful event.
SENIOR SCHOOL INFORMATION NIGHT
Students in Years 10 and 11 are now considering their subject choices for next year. To support parents and students in this process we conducted the Senior School Information Night on Tuesday 2 August.
Parents were able to interact on the evening with current teachers and students from every VCE class that we offer, and representatives from all of the major tertiary institutions in Melbourne.
I encourage every student to make informed choices when it comes to their course for 2017 and I remind them to access the student’s management team and career counsellors for guidance.
MUSIC BUILDING
At the last School Council meeting we took a tour of the new music facility which is our latest school funded building. This is now being used by music students.
The building houses a large rehearsal space, music tuition rooms and music classrooms. It is a great asset to our fantastic music program that continues to grow in popularity, and goes from strength to strength.
The building has flexible learning spaces that will also be used for school production and performance nights.
We thank the School Council and all parents for supporting the continual improvement of our school.
VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
From Friday 29 to Sunday 31 July, McKinnon Volleyball sent nine teams to the Victorian All Schools Volleyball Championships. The teams competed with excellent teamwork and sportsmanship during the testing three day event with the best result coming from the experience of the open girls who finished the tournament with a Silver Medal.
Many thanks go to the teaching staff, parents and former students who supported the teams during the event. They were David Strehlau, Lauren Mauger, Kellie Dickson, Ray Braniska, Liam Adlington, Paul King, Chris Hudd, Kirby McConnon, Phillipa Andrieux, Nadia Elkin, Fraser Rhind, Michael Skalova, Hannah Cole, Darcy Taig, Maree Taig and Ellie Adler.
McKinnon as a school finished the tournament as the 10th ranked school in Victoria jumping two places up the table from 12th overall in the 2015 event. This was an outstanding effort for all participants who were competing against specialised school volleyball programs from around the state.
In particular I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Phil de Salvo for being the inspiration behind the successful volleyball program.
INTERMEDIATE GIRLS SQUASH
Congratulations to the Intermediate Girls Squash team comprising Lucia Roohizadegan (C), Kathy Lee (2) and Anita Zhao (3) who had an amazing day at the Squash Victoria State Final held at MSAC on Thursday 4 August.
The girls went through the pool rounds easily defeating Kurunjang Secondary College 3-0 and Koonung Secondary College 3-1. Unfortunately they found the going very tough in the State Final losing to Melton Secondary College. They now have a nice Silver Medal around their necks for their efforts. An amazing performance girls!! Well done.
