BREAKDANCING STARS

Our two B-Boying breakdancers Huy Anh Nguyen and Yohei Hidano (both of Year 11) represented the college at the Interschool Breakdancing competition held at Melbourne High recently.

Both B-Boys registered in the 1 on 1 and the 2 on 2 competitions. Unfortunately both boys found the 1 on 1 battles extremely tough with Anh meeting the champion of the competition in the first round!

The boys joined forces for the 2 on 2 competition. They met Melbourne High School B team in the Top 8 and won! In the Semi-Final they convincingly beat Melbourne High School Team A crew 3-0 in a straight win. Ahn and Yohei were in the Grand Final!

Competing so well with their tricks the judges couldn't separate the teams and the Final was called a draw.  This meant Ahn and Yohei went to an extra round in a tie break battle.  Sadly they couldn't win the tie break round and came a very honourable second.

Below are the links to the photos of the competition. Look out for the Melbourne High School Youtube video.

Congratulations boys; the college is extremely proud of your efforts and are thrilled that as International students you have enjoyed representing the college in interschool sport.

We look forward to see the B-Boys performance at General Assembly during Asia Week!

BADMINTON COMPETITIONS

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS BADMINTON

The Intermediate Girls Badminton team of Cassandra Wu, Incy Lin, Helena Huang and Jiting Li played well in both their pool matches but lost both matches four games to two against very strong opposition. All the girls won at least one of their matches, played well and took away a number of lessons on where they can improve.

INTERMEDIATE BOYS BADMINTON

The Intermediate Boys Badminton team comprising of Jo Ee Lee, Chris Hoang, Zen Digby Lapusa, Sam Yuan and Ash Hunter started the first of their pool matches on fire, winning 6-0. The second match against Frankston could not have been any closer. Great wins for Chris in singles, Jo Ee and Chris in doubles and also from Sam and Zen in their doubles saw the match finish at three games all. The boys were devastated to find out that on a count back of points, they had lost by only two points overall. Every one of the team played really well and on another day the result could have easily been reversed. Next year the boys will be out for revenge.

SENIOR BOYS BADMINTON

The Senior Boys Badminton team consisted of Gabriel Giber, Leo Shen, Daniel Cui, David Zhu and Mark Chui. Once again the boys had two pool matches to complete to see if they could reach the final. Winning one of their games 6-0, the match against Keysborough would be decisive. After the first two singles, Gabe played well but lost and Leo evened things up with an excellent win against a strong opponent.  Daniel won another close match before David completed the singles with a win, leaving the team 3-1 up with two games to play. Unfortunately both doubles pairs went down and it looked like another result would come down to points. Unlike the Intermediate Boys Team, the Seniors got home by a single point to top their pool. In the Final, the boys came up against a very strong team from Melbourne High. The match was played in good spirits, but McKinnon lost 6-0 to finish in a commendable second place overall.

SENIOR SQUASH REPORT

On Thursday 28 July, while the rest of the school was swanning around the Duncan Mackinnon track, the Boys and Girls Senior Squash teams were hard at it trying to win a State Title at MSAC.

The Senior Girls were drawn in Pool B with Highvale Secondary College, Kurunjang Secondary College and Staughton College. The McKinnon girls lost 2-1, Kurunjang Secondary College withdrew.

The Senior Girls played off for 5th or 6th place. They lost to Melton Secondary College and lost 1-2. They henceforth came 6th.

The Senior Boys were drawn in Pool A with Trinity Anglican College (Albury), Templestowe College and Gladstone Park Secondary College. They lost 3-0 to Templestowe, won 3-0 against Gladstone Park and then lost 0-3 to Trinity Anglican College. They then played-off in the Final for 5th or 6th place and lost to Haileybury College 0-3 and henceforth came 6th.

The games were hard fought and in good spirit. Well done to all who competed.

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS SOCCER

The Intermediate Girls Soccer Team headed down to Cheltenham on 25 July to take on the other divisional winners in the Southern Metro Regionals.

The day got off to a slightly rocky start when we rolled into the venue to be greeted by a fire engine and a police car. However, after twenty minutes of wondering whether or not the tournament would go ahead, the fire officers declared the small fire at the back of the clubhouse building had not affected its structural integrity, and the games were free to get underway.

The pool games saw McKinnon pitted against Dandenong and Mornington.

In the first game against Dandenong we kicked with a fierce breeze at our back. After a couple of near misses Teresa Morrissey opened the scoring from long range. She doubled the lead shortly after with a goal that is becoming something of a special for her - Antonin Panenka gave his name to the chipped penalty, Johan Cruyff gave his name to the Cruyff Turn and, in the intermediate girls team at least, the corner that goes directly in will become known as the Teresa. After ensuring the team made it through the Kingston competition in May by scoring directly from a corner, she did it again at the SMR. Even though we were leading 2-0 at half time, we had to defend grimly against the wind in the second half. Schuyler King marshalled the defence expertly and Angel Lignos in goals dealt with the balls that did come through to ensure that our day got off to a successful start.

Winning our first game meant we could watch the other two teams in our pool take each other on before we took to the pitch again. The 1-1 draw they played meant that draw or win against Mornington and we played off for a spot at the State Finals. The wind again played its part and the game was largely played in Mornington's half as they attacked with it in the first half. We played attritional football as we sought to maintain our clean sheet and make sure Anthea Dimas, who had stepped into goals for this game, did not have many difficult saves to make. Even though we did have the wind in the second half, we still struggled to create any clear scoring chances. The 0-0 draw was, however, enough to send us through to the final against Gleneagles, who had won the other pool.

In the Final, McKinnon had first use of the wind which was still blowing just as strongly as it had all day. The game was, however, more end-to-end than the other games we had played. We knew we needed to score with the wind but time ticked away as Gleneagles won a series of corners. We did continue to defend resolutely as we had all day. With only seconds remaining in the first half, we did finally score. Anthea Dimas' throw near half way eluded the defender and Chloe Sloman drove with the ball down the line. A shimmy and some deft footwork sent her free and the Gleneagles centre back that had thwarted much of our attacking play throughout the half was drawn out towards her. As she came, Chloe slotted the ball past her and into Jemma Owen's run. A good first touch opened up the goal and her shot was just wide enough of their keeper for the ball to head towards the inside of the post as their defence scrambled back to try and prevent it sneaking in. To our relief and jubilation the ball hit the inside of the post and nestled in the back of the net. 1-0 to McKinnon but half a game against the wind still to come. As we had all day, however, we defended grimly against the wind, clearing our lines and not taking any chances near their goal. While it was not pretty, it was effective and for the third consecutive game our defence held strong.

Congratulations to all members of the team and a special thank you to both Anthea and Angel for sharing the goalkeeping duties. We did not concede a goal all day which was testament to both keepers and the way the team defended in front of them. We now look forward to the State Finals next month.

Coaches will advertise their teams on the sports noticeboards well in advance. It is our endeavour to give every junior student an inter school experience at least once throughout the year. As we are by far the biggest divisional school, we are limited by our opposition team entries. Smaller schools will not be able to field many teams. Interschool sports this term at basketball, hockey, touch rugby and futsal.

Good luck to all teams. Parents are always welcome.

YEAR 7 BOYS SQUASH

Congratulations to our Year 7 Boys: Michael Gershenzon, Dylan MacGregor, Terry Tian, Haans Dinu and Stephan Mitzeliotis who are the 2016 Southern Metro Regional Champions. Luck was on their side today. In the pool rounds they beat Keysborough 4-2 but just narrowly lost to McClelland Secondary College by 1pt. The winner of the pool came down to percentage and the McKinnon boys had the best for and against. They then progressed to the final against Glen Eira beating them 6-0.

They now progress to the State Finals on 13 September. Good luck boys!

Special mention to Dylan MacGregor who was undefeated for the whole day in all his singles and doubles!

The girls had an enjoyable day but found the competition too fierce losing their pool games to Keysborough and Frankston.

Congratulations on a great day and being fabulous ambassadors.

Go McK!!

GIRLS FOOTBALL

On Thursday 28 July, 17 girls piled into a bus trying to escape the freezing cold winter morning. Ready to face the challenging day ahead, the mood in the bus was excited yet focused. For many of the girls this was the first time that they will play footy, for others this was an annual occasion. After a 45 minute bus ride to J & P Cam Reserve, Cranbourne, the girls were ready.

The first match against Keysborough was a tough one, with them arriving late, giving us a six goal lead and subsequently the win. With the first game under our belt, the team was ready to face our number one rivals, Frankston/Mornington. A two hour break between our first game and the next meant an analysis of Frankston’s leading players, including two state players! We had a gruelling 40 minute game, but unfortunately finished below Frankston and missing out on a chance in the finals. We put up a good fight and everyone put in all their effort which really shone through in the game. We’d like to give a massive thank you to Mr Verlin for coming out and coaching us on the day and holding some quality training sessions.

NETBALL ALL SCHOOLS

The Intermediate Girls and Boys Netball teams set out to the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Friday 22 July for the Netball Victoria All Schools Competition.

It is always a tough day with State, Catholic and Independent schools participating. Our two teams were quite confident after giving up many afterschool hours to train. The boys team got off to a terrific start winning their first game of the day 9-1, however the girls came up against some tough opposition and lost a tense game 11-9 to Lavalla Catholic College who were the eventual winners of the day! The girls went on to record wins against four other teams to finish the day as Runners Up.  They will focus on the Southern Metropolitan Region Finals for SSV which are this week.

The boys team were too strong for the rest of the competition all day managing to string together five wins in convincing fashion, a credit to many of the boys who are still learning some of the fundamentals of netball and adapting to the way it’s played. They have qualified for the state all schools finals to be played in September.

We also recently had a visit from former Melbourne Vixen Sarah Wall, who has created a new and exciting netball fitness workout called, NETFIT. Our VCE students are studying training programs and were put through their paces by Sarah in a 45-minute workout.

Students were lucky enough to see Sarah in action as she managed to sneak on court and play in our lunchtime netball competition, Phoenix. Sarah showed the big crowd that she certainly hasn’t lost her touch since retiring from the game. We thank Sarah for the visiting McKinnon and taking the time to mingle with students at lunch.
