Dätiwuy Dreaming Performance

Our school hosted the Musica Viva in schools performance of Dätiwuy Dreaming. Based in the North east Arnhem lands, the group performed a variety of songs and dances which reflected the Yolngu culture and stories. Here are some of the comments from Room 13 students:

I liked when the performers put the white ochre on themselves and did the sacred dances. I also liked when the girl was dancing and the boy was beat boxing . I learnt that only the men can play the yiddaki. Luca

I really enjoyed all the dances because they always told a story. One of the dances I liked was the fire dance. The people thanked the fire for being made and respected that it helped them. I learnt that they play the didgeridoo (yiddaki) on boys so when they grow up they know the tunes. It can only be done on boys because only men can play the didgeridoo (yiddaki). Julia

I found it very interesting learning about their culture. I learnt that the different songs they make are either connected to their ancestors, their totem or showing that they respect the things they dance about. What I liked at the concert was the humour, the acting and the different stories. I understand that Datiwuy Dreaming has dozens of stories and they enjoy their career of showing people their dances. Hopefully we will get to see the concert again. Anastasia

I liked the girl cutting the boy to get the honey to spread on the bread. There acting was brilliant and the best part about it was when the boy started beat boxing and the girl started to swing her hair around. Rhys
