YEAR 7 BOOK BUYING ACTIVITY

On Monday 4 March students from Year 7 selected books for the library. It is great to see the enthusiasm students displayed when selecting. The books will soon be ready for the students.

CLEANING

For the last two years McKinnon has seen a lot of building activity. Our old evaporative air conditioning meant a lot of building dust entered the library. With the building works now completed and the installation of reverse cycle air conditioners it is expected that the library will stay more dust free. Staff and students are removing books from the shelves and dusting them down when necessary. The shelves are being washed and the books returned to the shelf.  Many thanks to the Duke of Edinburgh students; Skylar Ruthven, Zoe James and Arjun Jivanjee of Year 9 for your ongoing help with this task!

A WORD FROM OUR PRIME MINISTER ON READING

I think it is really important because if you expose kids to books really early on they get a love of reading and I think that really helps with their spelling.  Reading is something much bigger than a story. Reading is also about comprehension, it is also about understanding, it’s also about being able to comprehend circumstances, scenarios, situations. These things don’t have to be chore – they can be fun”.  His comments came in the light of a report ‘Progress in International Literacy Study’ which found that one in five Australian children do not meet international benchmarks for reading. His comments were reported in the Herald-Sun 3/3/2019 as part of their promotion of “The Kids News Spelling Bee”.
