Year 10 Social

On Friday 3 August, the Year 10 Social was held in the Nina Carr Centre. The theme was Starry Starry Night and the evening certainly lived up to it. The girls looked glamorous and their partners were dashing. There was the opportunity for professional photos and dress ups in a photo booth. Everyone danced the night away and enjoyed treats and pizza. Girls received awards for Best Dressed, Most Unique, Social Queen and various other acknowledgements. The night ran smoothly, with thanks to the many staff who helped. In the months leading up to the event, and on the night, the SRC and Social Committee showed commitment and initiative in their organisation and dedication to ensuring everyone had a unique and memorable Social.

Making  A Difference Conference

On the 11 and 12 August, Diane Luo (10), Sinead Garry (9), April Thomas (10) and I had the lucky experience to go to the MAD (Making a Difference) conference which is an event run by the team at Ylead on behalf of the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia.

We had four inspiring guest speakers that inspired us in many ways.

  • Hannah Easton from ‘Thank you’ who taught us how important teamwork and sharing your story helps your plans to thrive.
  • Christy Hildyard from ‘Grace pads’ who inspired us by saying that nothing changes if you don't try to change it and to remember “If not now when, if not me who?”.
  • Amy Pearce from ‘Oaktree’ who explained the different fundraising techniques Oaktree uses.
  • Tim Baxter from ‘Who gives a crap” explained how important customer relationships are and how to use social media as a free, positive marketing source.

The conference also taught us many valuable skills such as to find our passion and strengths and how to network. We were able to explore these skills with the opportunity to interact with the representatives from six different companies. On the last day of the conference, we were able to use all that we had learnt by going into a group to create and pitch for an idea that would strive to make a difference in the world.

It was so incredible to be able to have this experience with so many other passionate girls. We are all excited to bring our newly found knowledge and connections to MGSC.

World Vision Backpack Challenge – Go Team Mentone!

Students from MGSC have been getting behind this year’s World Vision Back Pack Challenge with the College now positioned at 59th of all schools in Australia. We have been steadily moving up the ranks of fundraising to support the plight of people overseas displaced particularly by the conflict in Syria. Our involvement follows twelve of our student leaders attending a major conference earlier in the year. These students have worked together to raise awareness and contribute to supporting others.

On Friday 17 August, the whole school is asked to come together to live out of their school bag or back pack for the day. It is a small gesture to acknowledge the fact that so many around the world flee their homes with only what they can carry on their backs and avoid using their lockers. Students are asked to donate a gold coin, which will be added to the Mentone Girls’ SC team registered for the challenge. Students can take their bags into classes on that day only. The following Monday, the Back Pack team will be holding a book sale out in the courtyard at lunchtime. All books are in great condition and are a random selection of novels suitable for all ages. Funds raised from the books sale will also go towards the Backpack Tally.
