Cerberus Naval Base
On Tuesday the 10 October Year 10 PreCAL and Year 11 VCAL, students went to the Cerberus Naval base near Hastings.
We had to arrive at school earlier than usual as the Navy base had supplied the bus for us and had a schedule to keep to. We all left at about 8:40am and got there about 9:30am.
When we arrived, we stopped at the Security Gates and were introduced to four men in Navy uniforms. We later found out that three of them were new recruits (2 Navy and 1 Airforce) who had only been in the Defence Forces for a few months.
Our key tour guide was Chief Petty Officer Mr Danny Mulheron.
The first section we went to was the Recruit Barracks – the sleeping section. This is where all the recruits live, sleep, shower and store belongings. We were shown the properly folded clothing and perfectly made beds. One of the tour guides explained to us about how important hygiene is when boarding and living in a ship for long periods. She told us that they teach recruits high hygiene standards so that when they board the ship they will have low risks of catching viruses or bacteria.
From there we went to the gym and sport/recreation area. I was absolutely amazed by the high tech equipment and amount of space reserved for all staff and recruits. I definitely think this was my favourite section that we went to during our visit to the Cerberus. They had a weights room, cardio room, rock climbing wall, basketball court, soccer court, swimming pool and heaps more.
After we visited a few other sections, we then went and had lunch at the cafeteria (Mess hall). They were serving quite a few different hot selections. I ended up having the beef schnitzel, rice, garden salad, pasta salad, potato salad and a multigrain bread roll. The food was ok, especially the pasta salad and the potato salad, but it was really good to sit in with Defence Force personnel.
I think the most interesting section we visited was the weapons area. We were shown an old turbo missile and turbo missile launcher. The Navy Officer in charge of this section explained each working part of the turbo then later let some of the students shoot some soccer balls out of the launcher. It was really loud but was really cool to see in real life.
I honestly loved the experience, even though I don't see the Navy as a future career. I definitely think it's an important thing to explore as it is an interesting and varied career with many opportunities.

Year 7 e-learning
Having an iPad has allowed me to push my learning even further and to learn more efficiently. I regularly use my iPad to complete my assignments. It helps me to complete them with more information and with an easier, creative way to present them.
I have used my iPad in Maths on the website Tinkercad to create a 3D model of a house to further learn about perimeter, area and volume. In HPE I have presented my understandings about how smoking is harmful to the human body and causes devastating effects by making a slideshow presentation on Keynote. In STEP I used my iPad for my climate change project research to gather evidence for my persuasive essay.
Even though having an iPad is a good thing, I have to remember it is a privilege and to use it responsibly in class and not get addicted to my screen!

Year 7 Food Technology
Last week, as part of the "Creating a Design Solution" component in Food Technology, Year 7 students were asked to complete a lunch Jar.
As part of the project students researched the ‘lunch jar’ food trend then created different design options, whilst referring to the Healthy Eating Pyramid guidelines. After choosing their preferred option they designed their own recipe to follow during the production of their lunch jar. The students had to manage their time and resources to ensure they finished on time and worked in a safe and hygienic manner.
The students all put in a fantastic effort and came up with some very colourful and healthy options.
