Musical Notes

As we near the end of Term 3 we have had the joys of seeing our students learn, develop and grasp opportunities.

Annual Music Concert

The 2017 Annual Music Concert at Woodville Town Hall, was a community event which strongly reflected the wonderful work and dedication of our students. Over the past fortnight, we have received some fantastic feedback about the event from a wide range of members from our community.

The opening act, “Can’t Stop This Feeling”, performed by the combined choirs and Big Band Theory, started the evening with high energy and enthusiasm. The evening progressed with high quality performances from our choirs, Concert Bands, Stage Bands and Instrumental ensembles including the Flute Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble. The Year 2s had their first opportunity to perform at a Blackfriars Annual Concert and entertained our audience with their Recorder performance as well as singing and dancing to “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.

The Year 12 students were outstanding in their performance and were acknowledged during some presentations before the night concluded with the finale “Turn the World Around”. The lyrics of the piece explain how everything in our lives is intertwined and connected from our environment to our heart, mind and spirit.

A big thanks to our Maintenance staff for helping us transport all the music equipment to and from school to Woodville Town Hall in addition to our four very full cars. Thank you to all of the administration staff for their support in the planning of the event. A special thanks to Ms Anastasia Lambis for all of her assistance and Ms Angela Honner who assisted on the day with the set up.

Thank you to all the Primary and Secondary Staff who assisted with supervision during the day and all the staff who assisted on the evening. Thank you to the parents who have helped form the Friends of Music; your contributions on the day and evening were much appreciated.

To our comperes Ms Margaret Snelling, Frank, Joseph and Peter Snelling, you were absolutely fabulous and did some fantastic ad-libbing while lots was going on behind the curtain.

Thank you to all of the instrumental staff who had their ensembles perform; we had some fantastic quality of work on display. Thank you to Mr Charli Holoubek, Mrs Libby Hunter and Miss Marie Wohling for all their dedication and work on the evening. Not only were their ensembles fantastic, their generosity, enthusiasm and care for the students is always so evident.

We look forward to another successful event in 2018.

In concluding this week’s article, please see some of the comments from our students regarding the Annual Concert:

“Being involved with the music department is a really exciting experience.”

“When in Year 8 I decided to play the Alto Saxophone; as a guitarist, originally, this instrument has been fantastic to play. That’s why I love music so much, because of how varied and different it is to other subjects.”

“Events such as Generations in Jazz, the ABODA Festival and the Annual Music Concert have consistently been the highlights of my journey through Blackfriars, the music department has been my home for the last five years.”
