Emergent 2020:  VCE Graduate Showcase

Now entering its fourth year, Emergent 2020: VCE Graduate Showcase is a curated exhibition that presents the best art, design, film and photography by VCE Unit 3&4 students within the City of Casey region. Not only does our talented Yr 12 Nicole Carino from 2019 have her work exhibited in this exhibition but current Yr 12 Jermaine Ibarra had the opportunity to co-curate the exhibition. He discusses this experience below:

I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the co-curating team for Emergent 2020. It was a great privilege to meet and work with the team that I was a part of and it was fantastic to gain insight on the logistics of both curating art and organising an art exhibition down to most meticulous inner workings.

As a team over the course of three sessions we went through the curation process, we reviewed a variety of works from over fifty students, agreeing on the works by the twenty-nine being exhibited. The works on show explore an array of mediums, ideas and themes, from the deeply sombre, the surreal and the entertaining. A display of the resilience of the creative process through a year that was challenging and surreal in itself.

The opening night on the 20th of March was wonderful, the four co-curators acting as MC’s for the event. Through my suggestion St. Peter’s College own Elizabeth Sabelino and Dwayne Pereira played a very special musical performance.

When I first entered the exhibition space I was completely blown away, our team was in charge of the layout of the exhibit but to see it manifest into a physical space off of the page was truly something special.

I totally recommend the exhibit, it’s a true testament of the immense talent of our area’s youth, admission is free and it is open until Saturday, 11 April 2021 at Bunjil Place.”

It was indeed a great opening and hope you can get along to view the exhibition.
