Meet our College Captains

2021

Elizabeth Sabelino - Liturgy Captain Clyde North Campus

What do you see as your role as a leader?

As a servant leader, I see my role as someone who amplifies the student's voice. My role is guided by Petrine charism to selflessly put the needs of others before my own and to encourage and uplift their spirits to “Be Not Afraid”.

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

Being a student at SPC, I love the sense of community that we have. What I love about our school is that everyone is approachable and we all have a place to belong. More specifically, Harmony Day is one of my favourite school day/activity as it allows staff and students to embrace their differences to come together as one diverse community :)

Who is the one person you admire most and why?

My grandmother Mama Sita.

She is the woman that has shaped me into the person that I am now – instilling traditional Filipino values and virtues that I carry with me every day. In 2019, she passed away due to stage four ovarian cancer, but in her last moments, she was still fighting it like it was no big deal. Her strength is something I have always admired, teaching all her grandchildren to be tough, to follow our dreams and to never give up amidst adversity.

What are your goals as College Captain in 2021?

My goals for 2021 is to get more students involved in the liturgical aspect of the school. I think one misconception about liturgy is that it is centred around one form but it could mean a multitude of things. I want the students, staff and wider community even, to participate in liturgical experiences like Soup Vans, St Vinnies, Ozanam House, St Mary’s House of Welcome, etc. – to enable them to feel connected with their faith as they make Gospel values real by reaching out.

2021 College Theme

“I can do this through Christ, who gives me strength”. Philippians 4:13

How will you live this statement through your leadership role?

As the Liturgy Captain, I will use this theme as my anchor. I hope that I can continually use my platform to share God’s love and to be reminded that we do not have to do anything alone. When times may get hard during year 12 or my captaincy, this verse reassures me that my burdens and worries are insignificant when I have God and my peers who keep me anchored.

In one sentence what is the one thing that you would like to say to your fellow students?

The way you speak to yourself matters; look after yourself first and everything else will fall into place.

Sarah Gony, Liturgy Captain Cranbourne Campus

What do you see as your role as a leader?

My role as a leader is to be a guide to others whether that be by being a role model in my actions and the way that I carry myself, or being open and available to my peers to talk to. Another crucial role is to be a voice for those in our community that may not have one and amplifying other’s thoughts, ideas and feelings to make sure they are heard.

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

One of the positives of being a student here at St. Peter’s College is being a part of a community that is quite diverse and always feels welcoming. From the moment I step onto campus, the atmosphere is one thing that stands out as it is warm and inviting to all.

Who is the one person you admire most and why?

The one person I admire the most would definitely be mumzy because of how hard she works and the resilience that she possesses in her life. Mum has taught me that perseverance is a crucial virtue not only during times of hardship but also, in mundane situations. One thing that she has instilled in me is ‘there is always light at the end of the tunnel.´

What are your goals as College Captain in 2021?

I have quite a few goals but the main one would be for students to have finished this year being more engaged with religion and the spiritual side of life. I also hope to make liturgies more accessible for our community. I hope that all may come to have an open mind and willingness to explore their spirituality not just at school masses but in their everyday lives.

2021 College Theme

“I can do this through Christ, who gives me strength”. Philippians 4:13

How will you live this statement through your leadership role?

Above all, this bible verse helps me to remember that Christ Jesus is always there to guide my thoughts and actions as Liturgy Captain. This statement is one that I think speaks to everyone differently and can be interpreted in a number of ways. In my leadership role, this statement reminds me that not everything that I do needs to be done by myself as I tend to be a very independent person. It prompts me to ask others for help and to delegate tasks that are above my skill set.

In one sentence what is the one thing that you would  like to say to your fellow students?

Gratitude can take you a long way, happiness is present all around you if you just remember to stop and look for it.
