Lake Illawarra High Careers website is a useful website that is used by Years 10 - 12 students to access current information to assist in future directions, career planning, general information, job vacancies and newsletters. Facebook is also added to this website so students can like the page and get prompts for job vacancies, special events and current careers information. All caregivers are also welcome to access the site and find useful information. The link is

EXTERNAL VET COURSES

A number of students have selected to study External Vocational Education and Training courses at different registered training organisations. These courses start in week three Term 1 and will continue until the end of Term 3. Students travel to different campuses and have to be more independent. This is a wonderful opportunity where students experience a wide range of practical and vocational subjects to support them on their future career path. I wish them all the best in their chosen courses which include: IT, Animal Studies, Salon Assistant, Community Services, Business Services, Automotive and Manufacturing.

READY TO GO

The Ready to Go program, run by Fiona Crane, has started and is a popular activity among the students who are selected to participate. Ready to Go is an intensive Careers program for students in Years 10 – 12 who are then assisted in transitioning into further training, casual or full-time work. Skills and tips on how to present for interviews, producing excellent resumes, and developing the confidence to speak about themselves are all part of the work-ready program. Lake Illawarra High School sees the program to be an important and necessary part of school transitioning. A select group of Year 8 students will also be part of the R2go program where options to work and starting the conversation on future career goals and pathways are discussed.

YEAR 12 DISCOVERY DAY AT UOW

A wonderful group of Year 12 students attended the University of Wollongong 2021 Discovery Day with Mrs Gorman, the Year 12 Year Adviser, coming along for extra support. Various students across NSW had the opportunity to come to UOW during the past week. Each student planned their own timetable for the day in areas of their own interest. It was a fantastic way for students to discover our local university.

Due to Covid-19, the university arranged things differently on campus and did an excellent job in keeping us all safe. This day was excellent and it helped students make decisions on their future pathways and this is only one step in the process. LIHS students all really enjoyed their day with some knowing exactly the courses they would like to enrol in next year.

One of our students, Kasey, had an even extra special outcome as she was the winner of prizes and vouchers on the day. UOW had a competition for all in attendance and she was the winner with a photo of her experience at UOW uploaded on their website. Well done, Kasey!

SCHOOL-BASED TRAINEES AND APPRENTICES

While the school community was on summer holidays, dedicated students who have been successful to become School Based Trainees and Apprentice worked for their employers. The students are studying towards a qualification, working for an employer all the while doing the Preliminary HSC this year. The different businesses are ANZ Bank, Wollongong City Council Library, Warrawong McDonalds, Reece Plumbing, Bluescope, NSW Health, and Peak Sports and Learning. All are enjoying the work and the opportunity to do external study and work which goes towards their HSC. It's challenging but opens many opportunities.

  • School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships allow Years 10, 11 and 12 high school students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while still being at school.
  • School-based apprentices work part-time and undertake the first stage of their formal or off-the-job apprenticeship training. Whereas, school-based trainees work part-time and complete their formal or off-the-job traineeship training by the end of their HSC year.
  • The benefits to a SBAT is that they gain skills, undertake training that can contribute to their HSC and are paid for their work from an employer. School-based apprentices can commence full-time employment as a 2nd year apprentice from January after their HSC, providing that they have successfully completed the training program while at school.
  • LIHS has 7 SBATs and is the largest cohort.

As always, I am happy to help and can be contacted via the school's phone number during school hours to book appointments or interviews.
