Commencement Mass

Tuesday 16 February provided the opportunity for us as a community of faith to gather at our Oxford Falls Complex to celebrate the beginning of another school year, this being our 84th year here at St Pius X College. Our Commencement Mass also marked the first liturgical celebration in which our community was led by our new parish priest, Fr David Ranson. Our focus of the day was to launch, celebrate and further understand our theme for 2021 of “Better Together”. Our scripture and Fr David’s homily pointed towards the concept that as a community, we are stronger as a united group. Each of us has our own unique part to play in making St Pius the great school that it is.

Ash Wednesday

Following our Commencement Mass, as a College we today marked Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten Season, in Year Group liturgies. Each year group was made aware of the significance of Lent, our time to prepare for Easter Sunday. Lent is a time of: almsgiving, prayer life and sacrifice, ensuring that we can be the best person we can be. As a school in the Edmund Rice tradition, we wholeheartedly support CARITAS in their Project Compassion campaign. To be authentic to our motto of “Giving to the Poor in Handfuls”, each boy is asked to support the Lenten collection so that our almsgiving provides the dignity of life to those disadvantaged communities around the world.

During Lent, our Year 12 students will be visiting classes several times a week during Homeroom time. All students are asked to give generously to Project Compassion. The year of 2021 is one where we are asked in the words of Archbishop Oscar Romero to “Be more, rather than have more.” By this the young men of St Pius are asked to be counter-cultural, that is, they are asked to become a better person rather than amass material goods.

An update on our Lenten Collection will be provided in coming weeks.
