SPC 3/6/12 Hour Enduro

SPC have sponsored this event for the second year as Platinum sponsors of CARR for 2021 committing $500 in cash prizes that were handed out at the end of the event to 12hr winners, and the rest to random participants in the event. Students from the College, led by Patsy Ryan-Betts and staff member Emma Shearer kept racers fed and caffeinated for the duration of the 12 hours with some key times for mass delivery of spaghetti bolognese with peak times following the Come 'N' Try before the race, and at the completion of the 3 and 6 hour events. These ladies had a strong crew of senior students helping them throughout the night and all racers and spectators benefited from the service.

We had 88 registrations which was so great to see and I am sure we might have had a few more had it not been so complicated to register. This was five more riders than last year, however, the feel of the event as director, was vastly different with many more onlookers and supporters cheering on riders. There were a lot of riders in the 3 hour category which made for a busy night and start to the race. As 1:00am came round and the 6 hour ended there was only half the field out there giving riders the feeling of riding through the darkness alone!

The Club have just purchased the huge start/finish arch that will be used for the racing at EITA which we will be running ourselves after it has had a couple of huge years of dedication from Outback Cycling. Timing through race results has been getting better and better and except for a couple of categories being in funny spots we are closer to nailing this for Easter In The Alice (EITA). A new power hub from Pump and Power provided all of our power output to keep everything ticking for the night. Several new LED spotlights illuminated the Telegraph Station for the evening without frying the local macroinvertebrate population. There was even a small light show from Raby out near four posts which provided riders with an oasis like rest from the darkness in the early hours of the morning. James Tudor put together a short video that summed up the event nicely so check it out using the link below;

I personally was able to chat and catch up with loads of riders and spectators throughout the night, and appreciated the friendly banter and great conversations from all. Debbie Heller was on sports med and started off with a little craziness as people's lights jumped off their handlebars or helmets with a little skin lost but soon settled down as the 3 hour finished. Huge thanks to her for her 12 hour solo in the medical tent.

Big thanks to all the riders who made the event happen, and for being so great as individuals pushing themselves for one more lap and encouraging other riders to go that little bit further. Shout out to parents who rode laps with their Dirt Masters (under 13 riders). Thanks to all who were a part of setup, pack down, registration and food serving, you are all a part of what made this event such a big success. Looking forward to next year as a bigger and better version of 2021.

Some stats for your entertainment and details from results

  • Total of 649 laps ridden throughout the night = Over 4200km by all!
  • Race winners "Twins MTB Team" John Pyper and Theo Van Luenen completed 38 laps close to 260kms over the course of the night (lapping between 16 and 21 minutes without a break!)
  • 2nd overall "School of Hard Rocks" (Ted, Tarren, Tarneyl, and Don) completed 36 laps with times between 16 and 24 minutes to be not that far off the pace of the twins.
  • 3rd was closer again on 35 Laps "Rusty Rod Wood O'Kerr" lapping between 18 and 24 minutes.
  • Male 12 hour winner and 4th overall was Henry Hackett in his first solo 12 hour doing an amazing job throughout the night with 32 laps just shy of 220kms by himself. Henry had smashed out the first 140kms averaging 24kph within 7hrs but started to slow a little as the night went on. Fastest laps 14:45 and the first 12 were under 20mins! Stephen Brady in 2nd with 26 laps which saw him add to his tally from last year and Sunder Madabushi with 24 laps in 3rd rounded out the top 3. Huge efforts by all in this 12 hour Solo category.
  • Female 12 hour Solo winner Nicola Jelinek smashed out 30 laps and barely stopped for the night with an average lap time of 24mins (don't forget this includes charging batteries and toilet stops!) Georgina Beech came in second in the female category and seemingly came from nowhere into the MTB world in Alice. We would love to see more of her out on the trails.
  • Team America/ Pine Gap Wheelman had 4 Teams in the 12 hour Rock Wheelies Villains (5th), Vagrants (8th), Vixens (9th) and Vagabonds (14th) which is so good to see the antics going on there with many building up some serious Kudos for bragging rights for the rest of 2021.
  • 6 Hour winners "Chocolate Milk" (Owen Chenhall and Tom Stockwell) were lapping at an average speed of 16:45 which we can all agree is astonishing with fastest at 14:43! This pair were leading the race up until they finished 6 hours and 22 laps really keeping the tempo high for half of the night! The pair will be taking on the rest of Australia in Maydena, Tasmania for the National Championships next week so we look forward to seeing how they go and are glad we could provide a little warm up race! Team Espie Father and Son duo came in 2nd place after huge personal efforts and we welcome them to the Club and racing.
  • 3 hour being taken out by Darwin rider "Bret Townsend" on 10 laps with an average of 17:57 which was great to see him mixing it up with the teams and helping drive the pace at the start of the night. We hope to see more of Bret racing down here if work keeps lining up.
