Year 7 2021

New faces, new paces, new spaces!

2021 has proved thus far to be a fabulous year for the Year 7 cohort. After an interrupted school year in 2020, the newest members of the BSC community have made it their mission to settle in and make the most of their new environment.

Learning new routines, new classrooms,  bell times, customs, teachers' names, not to mention classwork - takes a lot of time and energy, and change can be very daunting for some students. With the support of teachers and peers, students have become familiar with their new school and found that there is a place for everybody at BSC. In different ways it has been a challenge for all, but they have all approached this challenge with optimism and enthusiasm and can be commended for their positive attitude.

I am confident that the Year 7 camp will prove to be a highlight for students and a well-earned celebration of their year to date, while providing a great opportunity  for them to further consolidate friendships.  Eighteen staff are  joining 175 students to have some fun in the sun this week, and all will be enjoying the chance to meet and work with students on a more informal basis.  Look out for photos in the next edition of the Brunswick Star!

in the meantime, here are some reflections about the year so far from students across the Year 7 cohort.

The morning was crisp and damp. Outfits had been laid out the night before, lunches had been made and my bag was packed. I was going to my first day of high school.  As the car pulled up to the gate of the school, I was terrified. What if I was wearing the wrong thing? What if I forgot my most important book? What if I my friends weren’t there? I know these all seem silly now, but at the time I was petrified!

I quickly said goodbye to my parents and followed the stampede of children flocking through the gates. And then finally through the crowd I spotted my best friend. We were both nervous for the day ahead but we tried not to show it. At the start of each class, I still felt uneasy and slightly nervous, but finally by the end of the day I had come to the conclusion that I was excited for my first year at Brunswick Secondary College.

The first term of high school has been really fun! I would say that my favourite memory from this term was meeting my friend Archie. I didn’t know him before starting at Brunswick, but we’ve become good mates. I met him at the start of the year while he was talking to some other friends, and I just joined in. He’s funny, and loud, and he helps me with my work. It’s been good making new friends at high school!

Starting high school was a huge thing for me, and probably was for lots of people. It’s like taking a big step into a whole new world filled with lots of new people to meet. I did feel very anxious at the start, but my parents told me there’s no need to worry. “You’re all in the same boat”, they said but I didn’t know what it would be like.

A few weeks has passed since, and now and I’m loving it. The teachers are amazing and can’t make you feel happier. There are things like more work, and homework, but that’s just part of growing up, learning, and taking responsibility. Another big thing is the amount of people to meet, there are people everywhere to meet. In the first few weeks of high school, I was making friends everywhere! People I had never seen before are now some of my good friends. If this is just the start of year 7, I can’t wait to see the rest.

It was the first day. The first period of high school – Science in F18.

The first day, the first class of Year 7, and we had no idea where we were going!

Our entire class was casually walking around F block as if we knew where we were going. But we were all extremely clueless and confused, as we had looked everywhere in F block for where we were meant to be, but the classroom was nowhere to be found. After a long time of searching, we walked around the corner to the classrooms right on the outside of F block -  just to see how obvious it was that F18 was right there! Our teacher was waiting for us with her head sticking out of the doorway. This was probably one of the scariest and funniest ways to start off Year 7!

Art is one of my favourite subjects. My class is the only art class that has art with the wonderful Miss Goddard. We do many great activities in art. In our first couple of sessions we got to do some pop art for the front of our art diaries. It included cutting out different patterns on coloured pieces of paper and gluing them over the top of each other, with our names in the middle. We learnt about an artist named Tatsuo Horiuchi who created amazing artworks on Microsoft Excel. We attempted doing this on Microsoft Word using lots of strange shapes and icons.

My favourite activity so far has to have been redrawing half of different celebrities faces. We cut up pieces of paper that had the faces of different celebrities into about 5 pieces. From there we stuck them in our diaries and attempted to draw the missing pieces. Overall, art has been a great subject to do and is really fun at Brunswick Secondary College.

Starting out as a new Year 7 student at BSC was scary. We didn’t know where to go or what to do to keep things going, but there is one thing that we all looked forward to… Co-curricular Programs!

The Co-curricular Program at BSC has something for everybody; whether its cooking in the morning or playing chess during lunch, co-curricular programs have got you covered! I  am in the Debating, History and Drama clubs, not to mention the Guitar Ensemble! Taking part in a co-curricular program hasn’t just given me something to do in break times, it has also helped me to develop skills that I have really enjoyed doing. There are things to do like: cooking, acting, reading, studying, sustainability and playing games, plus SO MUCH MORE!

So here’s my advice to you: even if you are not sure, try a co-curricular program - because I can guarantee you that you will have a FANTASTIC time!

Everyone feels different in their transition from Primary School to High School. Some may feel scared or worried, others excited and joyful, and some maybe a little bit of both.

For me, there were good and bad things going into high school. When I first came to BSC, I was nervous but also excited to start. There were lots of new things to try out and a new environment to get used to. Brunswick Secondary has more than triple the number of students from my primary school. I had to get used to having more than one or two teachers teaching me everything, as well as coming into every class with an open mind. So far, I’ve made lots of friends and I’m having a great time.
