9/10 State Soccer

Congratulations to our Yr 9/10 Girls' Soccer team who once again competed in the State Finals for their 4th year in a row. In their first match the team put their nerves behind them and came out strong and defeated Balwyn 2-0. In their second match they drew with Girton College 0-0, they then went on to defeat Maribyrnong 6-0. Finishing on top of their pool, the team moved through to the final to play against Parkdale. During the final they had a devastating blow when Rosie Rodger had to come off due to an injury. The girls fought hard but just couldn’t match Parkdale and were defeated 4-0. You were so close again this year! I think next year you will go one better. The team should be congratulated for their teamwork and fair play. A big thank you to Ms Legge for coaching the team.

On Wednesday 4 September, the Year 9/10 Boys' soccer team travelled to Darebin International Sports Centre for the State Soccer competition. The team were ready to test themselves against some quality opposition. The team played very well all day, but were up against some very impressive competition and finished the day with a draw and two losses. Well done to the team for their efforts and making it to State.

Regional Athletics

The weather very kind to us on September 4, when our Athletics Team travelled to Meadowglen for the Regional Athletics. With a team of 34 students, we had some outstanding results and a fantastic team spirit. Finn Andrew- Fraser who practically walked off the bus and straight into his event – the 15 Boys' High Jump where he jumped 170cm to come in third. Nessa Cooney-Hunt also came 3rd in her High Jump event with a jump of 1.40m. Niamh Tabit crossed the line 1st in the 3000m race where I believe she may have broken the NMR record for the second year in a row. Niamh also came in 1st place in the 1500m with her sister Amira hot on her tail coming an extremely close 2nd. Grace Young came first in 1500 walk and 3rd in the 1500m, her sister Mikaila came 2nd in both 800m and 1500m races. Doug Buckeridge came 1st in his 800m and 1500m events.

Emily Panopoulos had a great day out competing in 4 events where she came 1st in the triple jump with a distance of 9.20m, 2nd in the 100m, 3rd in the 200m, and 2nd in the 400m.

Jack Rodgers with a throw of 24.75m came 2nd in Discus.

The 1500m race seems to be a popular event at Northcote, we had 8 students represent our school in various age groups. In this event the top 2 go through to the State Championship – Tom Butler 1st 12-13 Boys, 14 Girls 1st Niamh Tabit, 2nd Amira Tabit, 15 Boys 1st Archie Noakes, 16 Girls Mikaila Young 2nd, 16 Boys Doug Buckeridge 1st.

To finish the day on a high, our 14 Girls' Relay team came in 1st. The team consisting of Ella Williams, Georgia Hamilton-North, Eleanor Suthlerland and Ava Robinson(Ava also came 2nd in her 400m race).

My highlight of the day would have to be Sarah Whitty. Sarah was quite unwell on the bus. She started to feel better by the time her 400m race so decided to compete. With all of Northcote cheering her on, Sarah crossed the line in first place, 20 secs ahead of her next opponent.

Congratulations to all of our Athletics team, they really do themselves proud with not only their hard work and training but they always show great what great sports they are on and off the track. All 1st place getters move through to the State Athletics Championship which is held at Lakeside Stadium on October 18 (with the exception of the 1500m walk, 1500m run and 3000m where 1st and 2nd go through)

Year 8 Table Tennis

On Thursday 5th September twelve Year 9 boys participated in division table tennis at the Darebin Community Sports Stadium in Reservoir. We fielded three teams of four.

The A team took on Reservoir, Lalor, St Johns, Thornbury and Lalor North. They beat all five opponents six rubbers to love and are through to the next round which will be played next term.

The Northcote B and C teams were scheduled to play Thornbury B in a round-robin but unfortunately, their competition pulled out. In order to give the teams some games students from the other five schools combined to form a ‘world’ team.

A good day was had by all with all the participants getting the opportunity to play both singles and doubles and also to score.

Year 8 Division Basketball

Well done to our Yr 8 Division Basketball teams who recently competed in the Yr 8 Division Competition. Our Northcote Girls gold team came through the day undefeated with qualifies them to move through to regionals which they will compete in next term. In the boys' competition our Northcote Gold team finished on top of their pool to play off in the final where they lost to Thornbury.

Thanks to the fabulous Cathy Lester for coaching the boys and to our wonderful student coaches Max Gurrisi, Jordan Charles, Sara Vaela’a and Olivia De Felice who coached during training sessions and on the day.

Year 7 State Soccer

Congratulations to our Yr 7 Girls' Soccer team who played in the State Finals at DISC on September 10. To get to this level the girls have had an amazing run, winning at Division and Regional events putting them in amongst the top 8 teams in the State.

Our girls had a loss to Balwyn 2-0 in their first match. Rather than letting this dampen their spirits, the loss made the girls more determined to try make up some ground. They came out strong in their second match and defeated Bendigo South East 2-0. After this win, the team had a break and some time to recover before their third match against Maribyrnong. Although they were a little worried about this match, they didn’t show it. In this match, they defeated the Sporting School Maribyrnong 2-0. They ended up coming second in their pool. The team should be proud of themselves. To make it to this level at such a young age means these girls are definitely a team to watch in the future. The overall winner of the day was Balwyn, the only team our girls lost to. They defeated Mentone 6-0.

We would like to thank our student coaches Rosie Rodgers and Audrey Kennedy. Thank you also to Tess Legge who attended and coached the team in all tournaments.

Year 7 Division Table Tennis

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: YEAR 7 COMPLETES HAT TRICK FOR TABLE TENNIS

On Thursday 12th September fifteen Year 7 boys competed in division table tennis at the Darebin Community Sports Stadium in Reservoir. There were three teams. The A team had six players, the B team four and the C team five.

The A draw was big: eight schools were competing: Northcote, Reservoir, Lalor, St John’s, Thornbury, Lalor North, Preston and William Ruthven.

The A boys defeated every opponent! A particular mention to Jarrah Kearney who excelled.

There were only four teams in the other draw: Northcote B, Northcote C, Thornbury B and Preston B. Each team played the others once and each boy got the opportunity to play singles, doubles and umpire. Two weeks ago the Year 9 boys went out and beat all four opponents: Reservoir, Lalor, Lalor North and Thornbury.

Last week the Year 8 boys beat all five opponents: Reservoir, Lalor, St Johns, Thornbury and Lalor North.

This week the Year 7s beat all seven opponents!

This gave Northcote High the hat trick. This is a huge achievement and a credit to all the students who have been coming to the 8am training all term.

All three teams will be competing in the next round next term.

Year 7 Division Basketball

Congratulations to our Yr 7 Basketball teams who competed in the Division Basketball Tournament at Coburg Stadium on Friday September 13. We had 2 boys team and 2 girls teams competing in some very competitive matches. In the girls' competition, Northcote Purple defeated Lalor North and missed out by only 2 points against Thornbury. Northcote Gold easily defeated Lalor and Preston, to finish on top of their pool. This then qualified them to play off in the final, only to lose to Thornbury by 3 points.

A big thank you to Sophie Hargreaves and Lexi Mackey for coaching our Yr 7 Girls. They did a fantastic job running training sessions at lunchtimes and coaching on the day. Well done team!

In the boys' competition, our Gold team was looking promising but unfortunately missed by only a few points in their first match against Lalor, they then went on to have an easy win over Preston. Northcote Purple had wins against Reservoir, Thornbury B and Preston B to finish on top in the B pool.

Thank you to Connor Lester who coached the boys in the lead up to the tournament, but was unable to attend on the day due to school commitments.

Thank you to our wonderful staff Paul-Micah Sullivan and Jonathan Hoon. Paul-Micah was unable to attend on the day but had been running training sessions with the boys; Jonathan stepped in and coached the teams on the day.

Senior Girls State Basketball

As this newsletter is being published, our Senior Girls' Basketball team will be competing in the State Basketball Championships at MSAC. This is a fantastic achievement to make into the top 8 teams in the state. We will keep everyone updated during the day via NHS Sport Insta page. Results and write up will be in the first newsletter of Term 4. We would like to thank Anthony Stafford (Emma, Laura and Sarah’s dad) for coaching our Seniors Girls at Regional and again at the State Championships. Good luck!

That's a wrap

Once again we have had a busy term in the Sport department. We would like to thank all the staff and student coaches who have helped out with training sessions and coaching and attending with teams on Competitions days. Thank you also to all of our fantastic students who have represented our school. Well done to you all. Happy holidays.
