VET Term 3

What's been happening in Vocational Education and Training (VET)?
As many of you know, Northcote High School has a partnership with N.C.A.T. and many of our external students travel to NCAT to do a VET subject. On Wednesday Mohammed and Yousef, our visiting teachers from Saudi Arabia, took a tour of NCAT to see Northcote High School students in action for themselves. I explained that we have 100 students (approx) at Years 10 – 12 who travel off-site once a week to complete a VET qualification. Most of these qualifications are done over two years and are at either certificate 2 or certificate 3 level. I explained that VET courses contribute to both the VCE certificate and the VCAL certificate and can contribute directly to ATAR score for VCE students through VCE VET exams or indirectly through an increment.
Mohammed and Yusef visited a Screen and Media creative design class where Northcote High School students were animating traditional fairy tales in a software program called Animate. Mohammed was particularly interested in this course as he teaches a similar course in Saudi Arabia. Next we visited the automotive workshop to inspect the workshop and then it was off to the Carpentry and Engineering workshops. Next term we plan to visit A.I.E. who auspice the Screen And Media: Game Design VET subject which is run at Collingwood College.
AUSLAN: a new offering at Charles La Trobe College
In other developments, there is a new VET subject being offered in 2020. This is Auslan and we have a couple of students who have applied to do this subject next year. Auslan as you know is a system of signing. And it is one of a wide range of subjects that are offered through VET in our curriculum.
Horticulture is another subject currently being delivered at CERES. Students who enrol in this VET subject may find themselves chasing chooks on a Wednesday afternoon instead of being in the classroom!
Applied Languages: Chinese
Three years ago Northcote High School may the decision to deliver its Chinese language program as a VET Applied Languages program. Certificate 2 is delivered in Years 9 and 10 and Certificate 3 is delivered in Years 11 and 12. The aim is to focus on Chinese language acquisition. This is a course auspiced from Victorian School of languages that teaches language with competencies based on industry needs. Whilst there are no VCE exams offered in this subject, students are given unit credits towards their VCE and there is an increment of 10% of the fourth subject added to the ATAR.
