Religious Education

Mrs Streckfuss along with Mr Jolley and Ms Tahnee Rooke led our Year 11 Studies of Religion students with a hands on learning activity which focussed on the connection of the Dreaming, the land and identity from the perspective of Aboriginal people.

The River Activity  By Tom Ferguson

The Year 11 Studies of Religion classes took part in an activity that highlighted the atrocities which occurred during Australia’s early colonisation period.

Students formed groups and given Wiradjuri Totems, they were tasked to create a river based on this Totem. This was done two reasons, the first was to place students into nation groups to create a sense of belonging and identity. The river showed how we are all inextricably connected to each other and to the land.

Students then connected all the rivers together only to see them be ripped up and thrown away as if it was nothing. They were then required to sit in an uncomfortable, unfair confined space to represent the sheer atrocity that Aboriginal people faced on reserves.

With over 60 thousand years of rich culture for it only to be destroyed in a matter of years, no wonder it is still felt today. This activity was a humbling experience as all our troubles seemed so small in comparison.

Year 7 Religious Education

Year 7 are working on their first inquiry task.  The objective is to explore what it means to 'belong' and consider the rituals and traditions of how we are initiated into a community.  Students are in the ‘gather’ and ‘create’ phases where they use the relevant, useful, appropriate information they’ve found through research and interviews to create a two minute presentation for their class.

Students have identified topics around initiation in religions such as Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist.  Some have looked at tribal rituals from around the world and others, a range of different communities they belong to.  We look forward to watching presentations in Week 7.

Year 8 Religious Education

Year 8 students are currently working on their assessment task - Promoting Forgiveness within their current unit of study on Reconciliation. Each student is constructing an Inspirational Quote Card that reflects a message of forgiveness from the Bible.

The Inspirational Quote Card is an integration of a visual image with a message of forgiveness from the Bible. Students are required to explain why they have chosen their image and Bible quote in a written response. We look forward to seeing how each student showcases their creativity and learning on Forgiveness.
