The Comedy of Errors

Tim Dehn - Community Relations Manager

In late May a group of Secondary students, under the direction of Nic Frame and Kathryn Delaney, performed a brilliantly shortened version of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors. Using a traverse stage - where the audience sits either side of the playing space - this version ran just 90 minutes, full of pace, wit and originality.

Indeed, the casting was so good that, although I needed a degree of "willing suspension of disbelief" to accept the confusion between Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of Syracuse, no such effort was needed to accept the confusion between the two servants, Dromio of Ephesus and, er, Dromio of the other place. Such good casting! I and those next to me were genuinely confused much of the time - the two actors had the same gestures, expressions and body language.

The intimacy of the space was another delight - an audience of just 120, actors mere feet away from us, every expression and nuance delivered to great effect. This was the first time we had used the Community Hub for an event such as this, where that building's versatility was fully demonstrated.

Congratulations to all.
