Welcome back to our wonderful Year 9 and 10 students, we hope you and your families had a safe and happy new year. Rest assured we have been hard at work preparing for the best 2020 possible.

As you can see we have plenty of new faces in our middle school team - welcome to Liza, Chris, Virginia and welcome back to Cassie. This is a very experienced, dedicated and passionate team of people who have very high expectations of students in Years 9 and 10.

We also thank and acknowledge the wonderful Middle School Team of 2019 - Amy, Jasmine, Chris and Gwen - who have passed the baton on to our team in 2020. We also welcome Ms Eloise Haynes as the Assistant Principal for Year 9 and Mr Ayman Youssef the Assistant Principal for Year 10.

We are all very excited about this year, especially regarding the number of new opportunities being offered to our students, including all the wonderful choices our students were able to make in their 2020 classes. Having a say and some control in their learning is powerful and we hope to see more student leadership and hear more student feedback than ever before.

THINKING ABOUT THE FUTURE

Year 9 and 10 is a key time for thinking about pathways and careers. We want to give you every opportunity to succeed and so we have organised some great events for 2020:

Year 10 Careers Week - 18th to the 22nd of May.

After much consultation and feedback we have decided we want to work harder to get our students future-ready and so a traditional ‘work experience week’ will not run in 2020. Don’t worry though – if work experience is something you are passionate about and you have found a truly valuable placement then you can still attend – you just need to pop in to middle school and careers to negotiate your dates. Our Careers Team has designed an exciting Careers Week where students will participate in excursions, hear from guest speakers, attend workshops, prepare resumes and cover letters and participate in mock interviews. Stay tuned to hear more soon.

Year 9 Careers Counselling

In 2020 we are also introducing the Morrisby Career online discovery tool and counselling. This one-on-one careers counselling is in addition to the careers counselling already available at school and provided by external experts all of whom are accredited career practitioners.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US FROM HOME

Can all families please ensure that their contact details are up to date and correct so that we are able to contact home as soon as possible to discuss successes and concerns.

Uniform is one of the ways we show school pride. Please ensure your young person has all the necessary uniform and wears it each and every day. On rare occasions this is not possible please provide a note from home.

Support our transition to a mobile-phone free school day. Students are expected to either not bring their phones to school OR keep them in their lockers during school hours including lunch and recess.

Please try to avoid booking holidays during the school term and notify us of any absences as soon as possible using Compass or by calling the schools absence line. Attendance is incredibly important especially in Year’s 9 and 10 as we prepare for VCAL, VCE, further study, employment and beyond!

Talk to students about their new 2020 school diaries – we really want students to use their diaries to ensure they are highly organised, communicate between home and school and track homework and other special dates.

This year we will strive to work in closer partnership with parents and carers to get the best possible success for all students in the middle school. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns to please ensure you contact one of the middle school team so we can discuss these with you and find the best possible way to support your family.
