Sport Report
I am happy to report that Koonung has already had success in Interschool competitions in the first few weeks of the year.
On Day 1 of Interschool competitions, on Thursday 15 February, the Intermediate Boys (coached by Mr Harte) and Intermediate Girls (Mr Sanderson) teams won their Whitehorse Division competitions and have qualified for region finals in October.
On the same day, I had the pleasure of watching the Intermediate Boys and Girls Tennis teams. All students competed enthusiastically and with great sportsmanship, but were eventually beaten by stronger opponents.
On Tuesday 20 February, Koonung had Senior Boys Netball (Mr vandenDriesen), Senior Girls Netball (Ms Prosenak), Senior Boys Cricket (Dr McKie) and Senior Mixed Tennis (Mr Oaten) competing in Whitehorse Division Competitions. Once again, our students performed admirably but ultimately finishing 2nd in most of these competitions. Notable highlights were:
- the Boys Cricket team who pushed SEDA (a cricket academy school) all the way in the final, losing by 7 balls.
- the Senior Netball Boys going down by 3 points in the final to Box Hill High School
- Tara Reiter (our sole female representative in Mixed Tennis) outgunning a number of male opponents in her singles and doubles matches.
On Thursday 1 March, Volleyball (Boys and Girls), Baseball (Boys) and Softball (Girls) competitions will be conducted for students in Years 9 and 10.
The first of the House Carnivals (Swimming) takes place on Wednesday 28 February at Boroondara Sports Complex from 9am – 2pm.
Attendance at this event is compulsory. Students who choose not to attend will miss out on the opportunity to represent Koonung at Interschool Sport Competitions for the rest of the year.
Remember, to Slip, Slop, Slap when competing in outdoor sports and to drink plenty of water!

Intermediate Girls Cricket Report
On a spectacular late summer Thursday the Koonung Girls Intermediate Cricket team steamrolled their way into the next round of inter-school cricket. Batting first against Box Hill, superior stroke play and running between wickets saw the girls rack up 131 for the loss of 2 wickets, later dismissing their opposition for a paltry 25. In the final they took on Blackburn, themselves convincing winners of their round robin match. However, it was more of the same from Koonung as skipper Caitlin Morando (52n.o.) and Iona Cameron (19) got the side off to a flyer. No sooner were the Blackburn girls celebrating the success of a wicket, they began wishing they hadn’t made such a tactical error, as whirlwind Heidi Pearce strode to the crease flailing the bowling for a quick fire 45n.o. off far fewer deliveries. Shell-shocked, the Blackburn girls were never in the hunt limping to 6 for 55 from their allocated overs.
Congratulations to the girls who represented Koonung with great spirit, camaraderie and no shortage of skill. Other notable performances came from Nanako Masuda who claimed wickets in her first competitive game, iron gloves Amanda Ling, twin plankers Ellie Dooley and Teagan Crosisca, Iona’s perfectly judged moonballs, Ella Morrison spilling blood for the cause and an amazing spell of bowling from Lauren Smith. The girls will return in Term 4.

Interschool Senior Netball
Tuesday 20 February was the day three keen and talented Koonung netball teams played in the interschool competition.
The Girls B team had a draw (v Box Hill HS) and one win (v EDSC). The Girls A team had two very close losses (v Box Hill SSC, Box Hill SSC) but their final game was a win (v EDSC).
The boys team played four amazing games having success in the first three (v Box Hill SSC, Blackburn and EDSC). Their fourth game was against the also undefeated Box Hill HS. In a most exciting game the boys unfortunately lost but 3 goals.
The leadership displayed by so many individuals on the day across all three teams was one of the many highlights. Others included the way they all teamed together, supported and encouraged each other, their sportsmanship towards opponents and officials as well as being able to show off their high level netball skills.
The most spectacular highlight was from one of the boys whom intercepted an opposition pass, horizontal in mid-air then slid 3-4 metres on the ground only to be called for stepping. That is commitment Jimmy!!
It was obvious to us just how much they enjoyed their day and we were glad to be a part of it.
