STEM NEWS

from Felix Hobson, Director of STEM

Hello STEMgineers - I hope you had a lot of fun on the holidays - did you do any Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths projects?  I built LEGO, programmed MIDI/Scratch and made lots of movies. It’s a new term and it’s exciting to start the new STEM and Inquiry projects.

FILM FESTIVAL UPDATE

We understand deadlines are tough to meet so you can still send in your films on Seesaw this week. Please remember to put your title and credit in the film so we know who directed it. See the festival entry checklist and extra tutorials from the school and ACMI at the Film Festival school website, view it using your school gmail account.

ACMI are helping with feedback for the top ten shortlisted films.

STEM SAFETY TIP

Today we will have a security tip and here it is: Use kid friendly websites and remember to check the age level and kid suitability. Some examples of safe websites to search information and research are Kidcyber Kiddle and ABC Kids.

Commonsense Media is a great site with kid and parent reviews for websites, apps, movies and books.

STEM RECOMMENDATIONS

Remember cooking is also science so you can make recipes from the ABC kids cook book https://www.abc.net.au/cm/lb/12135082/data/abc-kids-recipe-book-data.pdf

It was Children’s book week and the libraries have so many good STEM books I recommend LEGO how-to books, Eddie Woo math books and Weird Wild Amazing by Tim Flannery. Please share your favorite STEM books for the next STEM recommendations.

P.S Watch on iView or ABC Kids 22 for Play School Science Time https://www.abc.net.au/abckids/shows/play-school-science-time/

And on ABC Me! you should also watch Look Kool https://iview.abc.net.au/show/look-kool because it is STEM cool and funny.
