STUDENT ACTIVITIES

YEAR 12 DRAMA PERFORMANCE

Our Year 12 Drama students had the opportunity to perform to a practice audience and give some very needed outside feedback. This opportunity combined with the chance to perform in front of socially distanced audiences of Year 7 classes reminded the students how important the audience that they have been missing is and they felt it lifted all their solos.

The year 12 students travelled individually to the venue in Moorabbin and were very grateful for the parents that arranged their days so we could all convoy up in separate cars in line with VCAA and Health exam regulations. The assessors and admin made them feel at ease and they all felt like their solos went really well.

We are so proud of their efforts during remote learning to remain dedicated to their performance outcomes in this difficult year and wish them all the best for their results.

ONE FOOT FORWARD CHALLENGE

During the month of October, Mount Eliza Secondary College took part in the Black Dog Institute’s One Foot Forward Challenge. The Black Dog Institute is the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan. The institute provides educational programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services and public resources to drive evidence-informed change in mental health where it’s needed most.

Black Dog Institute’s One Foot Forward Challenge encouraged participants to step up and take a step towards 20km, 40km, 60km, or a goal of their own in an attempt to raise much-needed fund for mental health research.

In an attempt to encourage more participants, Mount Eliza Secondary College entered into a friendly competition with the other 5 schools from our district to see who could raise the most money towards such an important cause. As a school and a team entered into the challenge, we originally aimed to raise $2000. This had to be lifted many times and with the help of a free dress day in term 4 we have been able to raise $9622.

This is the most money out of any school team entered into the challenge throughout the country. Such an enormous team effort that we can all be proud of.

HOUSE POINTS WINNER FOR 2020

With 2020 being a year like no other, our House Points Competition did not represent the normal competition. In term one the annual swimming carnival went ahead as normal with Kimmuli taking out the win, but unfortunately the Athletics Carnival had to be cancelled. After lockdown 1.0 House cross country looked a little different. COVID restrictions meant a whole school carnival couldn’t go ahead but instead in year levels. Manyung was able to take out the Cross Country Trophy thanks to all the super keen year 7 Manyung participants.

The cancellation of the Athletics Carnival left a gap in the overall competition so the innovative leadership team came up with the idea of the ‘Spring into Action’ House Points Challenge. Each km that a student or staff member ran or walked was remunerated with a house point. This was an extremely successful challenge that really motivated many students, staff and their families to improve their level of physical activity during lockdown 2.0. The competition ran for 3 weeks and each week a student received a Rebel voucher for running/walking the most kms as an incentive. There were some awe inspiring efforts from students each week and the overall total kms/points winner was Kimmuli.

I’m pleased to announce that the overall winner for the House Points Competition was Kimmuli. Congratulations to all staff and students for their contributions to the competition in 2020 and I will look forward to witnessing our school community’s efforts in 2021.
