Secondary has had a couple of busy weeks. We have many programs running in our school such as Hands On Learning Café and Build, the Coffee Cart, Advance, Vet and SBAT – but what do all these names mean?!
Hands On Learning Build
This program is run by Rob out in the HoL Build shed. He enables students to learn skills which support completing activities such as crazy paving and bee hotels. This year students have been working together to clear an area in the build area to make way for a new BBQ which was kindly donated by the Glenroy Women’s Auxiliary. They used crazy paving to pave the entrance to the build area. On Monday the HoL Build students celebrated with a BBQ to thank the Glenroy Women’s Auxiliary and invited Leadership to attend. Hands on Learning Build offers students ways to learn new skills but also connect with the community in their projects.
Hands On Learning Café
Two of our classes currently attend the café program each week. This term they are learning the skills they will need to then run the canteen program next term. They have been learning to use the equipment in the kitchen such as the oven, pie warmer, microwave and benchtop to make items such as pizza scrolls, toasted sandwiches, boiled/fried eggs and cake in a mug. Students will also learn important skills such as reading orders, collating orders and working out what needs to be cooked.
The Coffee Cart
Possibly one of the most appreciated programs by the staff at JSA! Select students take part in the coffee cart each week. They learn barista skills such as grinding the beans, frothing milk, temperature control and how to make different types of coffees. Staff are able to go to the coffee cart and order their favourite hot drink. Students are learning not only coffee making skills but also customer service in this program.
VET
Some of our students attend Hume Valley Special School to take part in the VET programs offered there, including Outdoor Education and Music. Upon completion students will attain a certificate. Both groups throughout the year learn valuable skills which they will take to jobs in the future. They complete modules, assessments and take part in some interesting excursions in these programs.
SBAT
We have a group of students attending the Northpoint Centre each week where there are learning job related skills in warehousing. NorthPoint provides food for people who are less fortunate and need that bit of extra help. The students are learning skills such as collating orders, packing, OHS and work related skills. Our students are expected to adhere to the work places safety practices which includes wearing Hi-Vis clothing and safe work boots. Our students take their jobs very seriously and look forward to this every week.
Room 21 has had a great start to 2023. Edward, Josh, Ismail and Peter have made a smooth transition from middles. Our older students have supported their friends amazingly into the Secondary Sub school. This term we have worked hard in Maths and English and made delicious things in cooking. We have also learnt how to take care of our plants in the garden.
This term Room 21 welcomed teacher John to our classroom. He has already established strong relationships with the students and has introduced students to current affairs. The students have settled into school life and into their new routines. We are all proud of the progress our students have made so far and can’t wait to see what the rest of year brings.
