Reading in the Junior Learning Community

This term, Junior students have been practising reading for enjoyment. They have been doing this by exploring the texts in our classroom library. Each library contains different genres directly related to student interests, e.g. dinosaurs, factual books, fairytales etc. The topics change regularly so that children are exposed to various topics and text types to expand their interests.  We are fostering student curiosity by using the 'Epic!' reading app to search for and learn about topics of interest. In our community, students are building their reading stamina and ability to follow an independent reading routine. This involves students completing their independent learning task and selecting a book from the library, and reading for a sustained period, without teacher prompting.

Each week every child will participate in a small explicit teaching group. These groups allow teachers to explicitly model and teach students the skills they are ready to learn in reading. The small group size also allows the teacher to monitor progress, and assess so that every child is reading an appropriate text.

Zones of Regulation

Our Junior Learning Community students have been learning about the 'Zones of Regulation' and broadening our vocabulary and understanding of our own emotions and feelings. We have been using check-in circles at the beginning of our school day to identify how our bodies are feeling and strategies we can use to help our bodies be 'Ready to Learn'.
