Student Activities

February 2023

Guest Speakers

Students have been very fortunate to have had many guest speakers visit them already here at the college to present a variety of topics relevant to our young people and their needs. Topics have included:

-Structured Workplace Learning

-Traineeships and School Based Apprenticeships

-Substance Abuse, Drugs and Alcohol and a visit from

-Victoria Police.

Homelessness

Homelessness is the major focus for Personal Development Studies this semester across the whole college. Excursions to the city have been organised with students visiting “Front Yard Youth Services” and “The Salvos” this month. These opportunities have given students an insight into homelessness and its prevalence in the Melbourne CBD. Students will work on developing fundraising ideas to raise money to be donated to those who are less fortunate and doing it tough out on the streets.

Amazing Race

Students enjoyed a locally organised competitive “AMAZING RACE” around the surrounding buildings as part of their team building and group work tasks. It was fantastic to see so many students eagerly participating in this activity. Congratulations to the winners.

Most correct answers – Jay, Toby and Joshua

Most creative photographs – Bailey, Riley, Seth, Anika and Sia

Community Connections

As part of building relationships to support surrounding organisations we have been working hard on getting our students out into the local community. Regular visits have been occurring at the following venues:

-Mill Park Stadium and Leisure Centre

-Mill Park Library

-Innovative Youth Centre (IYC) Bundoora

These venues provide opportunities for our students to work collaboratively, to develop teamwork, show initiative, to express competitiveness in a safe and controlled manner, to improve emotional intelligence, to upskill in a variety of areas and to give back by offering assistance and support to others.

Cooking

Students at Plenty River College receive lunch each day of the week which is prepared and cooked onsite in the kitchen at the College. Some days we have teachers and students preparing the lunches and on other days we are fortunate enough to have volunteers come in to share their culinary skills with us.

Below includes some snapshots of the incredible food that has been on the February menu.
