Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

SCHOOL PICNIC AND CULTURAL GARDEN OPENING

Thursday 9th February 5:30pm-7pm

It will be great to see many families join us on the school oval from 5:30pm for a picnic dinner with friends on Thursday afternoon.

We are also very fortunate to have Rob Lowe Snr in attendance to lead our welcome to country and to open the cultural garden space. We are very keen to add native plants which will add to the area. Don’t forget that we have a 10% discount at subway in Norfolk Plaza if you tell them that you are attending the Warrnambool PS picnic.

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAMS PRESENTATION

Assembly - Monday 13th February 2023

At assembly on Monday morning we will be formally acknowledging the student leadership teams at Warrnambool Primary School.

Students from Year 6 will be presented with their badges signifying their leadership roles.

Leadership teams include:

  • JSC Ambassadors (formerly executive)
  • Community
  • Sports
  • Sustainability
  • STEAM
  • Library
  • Administration
  • Koorie
  • Multicultural

We are proud of our students and look forward to them growing into their roles as the year progresses with added responsibility. It is also an opportunity for them to model strong leadership which will have a positive influence on the younger students. Parents are welcome to attend from 9am.

WPPA - FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

The WPPA fundraising committee do a fantastic job organising events and fundraisers for our school. We are very keen for helpers to join the committee or put yourself forward to assist with events. The WPS Colour Run is fast approaching and we will need parents from all year levels to help assist on the day. If you are able to help please let your child’s teacher know or contact Skye at the school office on 5561 5955. All fundraising efforts this year will go to our quest to construct a much needed new basketball/netball court. This will be quite an expensive exercise so all the help counts.

STUDENT ABSENCE

Across Victoria the school absences throughout 2022 soared to unprecedented numbers. We know that isolation restrictions were largely to blame for this spike and we know that students and staff who contract Covid 19 in 2023 should isolate until well or for a 5 day period. With this in mind we need to ensure our students are not missing school for other reasons where possible. Students with above average absenteeism have lower student outcomes than those whose absenteeism is limited. If your child must be absent please contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

SCHOOL COUNCIL 2023

We have a very committed and highly skilled school council membership in 2023 but we have two parent vacancies. If you are interested in nominating for school council for the next two school years please contact me for a nomination form. In the event that we have more than two interested nominees we will hold an election.

FOUNDATION 2023

We are so excited about the new foundation students and how they have settled into school life at Warrnambool Primary School. They are very confident and were able to sit through an assembly and negotiate a fire drill in their first week of school.

GEELONG AFL AND AFLW VISIT

We were lucky to have players from the Geelong AFL and AFLW teams come and visit on Monday. The students had a wonderful time listening to them all and having a kick of the footy.

PLAYGROUND

The Year 5/6 playground is complete and the students are enjoying the opportunity to use it at school. The Buildings/Grounds sub-committee are committed to ensuring we have improved and safe facilities across our school.

PUPIL FREE DAY - Friday 17th February 2023

The Great South West Coast Network of Government Schools is sponsoring Dan Petro- behavioural scientist- to work with staff across our network in the student wellbeing space. This is a very challenging area. Wellbeing is one of the Department of Education and Training (DET) priorities this year and we are very lucky to be able to access this time. No students will be required at school on that day but TheirCare will be operating for those who access that program.

Have a great weekend!
