Curriculum
Our Foundation students have continued to show responsibility and lifelong learning during their first weeks of school. This week was the last of our Wednesdays at home and we are looking forward to the students attending 5 days of school beginning next week. With a full week of school, students may become more tired during the day and most probably at home after school. Rest and relaxation is so important for our students as they navigate their way through this first term. If your child tells you they ‘do nothing’ at school, please remember this is normal and be assured they are doing lots of learning and growing!
Literacy
In Reading sessions this week, we have read a variety of texts discussing their characters and settings. Elmer was cheeky and funny, Benny was an advocate for the environment and Handa lost her fruit to the cheeky jungle animals. A focus for reading has been looking at sentence structure, focusing on capital letters and full stops. During reading at home, ask your child to locate the full stops in the book and maybe ask them why we need full stops. We have unlocked 4 more codes this week which has been exciting and Geraldine the Giraffe continues to entertain us when she introduces the codes. We have learned Bb, Ee, Hh and Ii.
Looking for ways to support your child’s reading? Discuss characters and setting in texts; if you child is confident reading a word, ask them to think of words that rhyme, have the same initial or ending sound.
Maths
Have you heard of subitising? Well, our foundation students this week have been exploring how to subitise and how we can use this strategy to help us when we are counting on from a known number. There have been lots of dice games and number recognition to support our learning this week as well as celebrating our number of the day which coincides with how many days we have been at school so far.
Wellbeing
During the first weeks of school, students have been exploring the Zones of Regulations and using these zones to explain how they are feeling. It is important for our young people to articulate how they are feeling and that all feelings are valid. Throughout this term, we will further explore how we move between the zones using our ‘Zones Toolbox’ to help us be in the green zone for optimal happiness. You may like to talk with your child about what tools you use to feel happy.
Enjoy a restful weekend!
