Independence Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya (Hello everyone!)

This week’s edition of the newsletter is brought to you by 3/4RB who are incredibly excited by the opportunity to share their student voice about the exciting things happening in the Independence Centre!

In Reading, we have been making predictions about our class novel, Wylah (pronounced Wheel-a) the Koorie Warrior. It is a great book with wonderful illustrations (we love the way the book was designed). We think Wylah is a very inspiring character that Jordan Gould and Richard Pritchard (authors) created. We have finished Chapter 5 and we are looking forward to seeing what happens next in the text. Whilst reading Chapter 5, we highlighted our noticings and wonderings and explained our thinking.

In Writing, the 3/4 students have been busy writing lots of persuasive speeches. These include SRC speeches as well as other topics like ‘Why we should have a class party’ and ‘Should we change the date we celebrate Australia Day?’. We have been closely following The Writing Process. First we do pre-writing, drafting, conferencing, revising, editing and finally publishing! We can’t wait to present our persuasive speeches next week!!

In Maths, the 3/4 students made fraction walls and stuck them at the back of our Maths books. We put them there for future use. We worked hard on folding the paper evenly so that our fractions were accurate. Although people said it was not very easy to fold the paper, we still had a lot of fun! We also played ‘Race to a Whole’ using fractions between 0-1 and mixed numbers between 0-3.

In Wellbeing, the 3/4s have been reading a book called Wylah the Koorie Warrier. We made posters describing what Wylah was doing in the story and how she felt. We connected this into our Wellbeing session where we spoke about the Zones of Regulation. We also talked about how there is no such thing as ‘bad’ zones/emotions, and that it is ok to feel all the emotions from all the different Zones. If you need  a fidget to help you self-regulate, use one. If you need a drink of water, go get one. This is because it is okay to feel upset or angry. We also looked at the Catastrophe Scale and how it can be used to help us put our feelings into perspective.

In 3/4 sport we have been practising for Gala Day which is happening on the 8th of March. There are four sports: Newcombe, Hotshots, Rounders and Soccer. On the day we are going onto a bus to different places depending on the sport and the venue that it is allocated to! We can’t wait to compete against other schools.
