Leadership Centre

The Grade 5/6s passed the 5th week of Term 1 with flying colours! This week the year 5/6s had a wet week, they gladly jumped in the pool at the swimming carnival!
Curriculum
Literacy
Wow, lots has been happening around the leadership centre, we have been doing literature circles in groups, every person in the group has a role to play, we were assigned to complete 6 different roles in our groups we were paired with!
For example, let’s have a look at the adventuring artists…
This is Wendy’s picture about Brontë imagining things in the story! Now let’s see what book we've been reading!
In reading this absolute belter of a week, we have been reading the book called ‘The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures Of Bronte Mettlestonne’. “It’s an incredibly funny and interesting book with so many exciting plot twists. I’m always on the edge of my seat for it!” Said one of the many engaged students, Angus K. We started to read chapters 3-6 of the book. In it, Bronte is told that she must go to 8 of her aunts across the kingdoms to deliver certain items because of her parents.
That was such an engaging week! Let's see what they get up to next week!

Maths
Wow! Week 5 has been such a stupendous week, particularly in Maths. We have been working diligently throughout the week, because we are working on a top secret, classified project, working for the prestigious government to produce THE…I’m just kidding! What we have really been working on is simply our maths park projects, nothing too delirious.
On the maths side of it, we designed parks and we had to try and figure out what the fraction, simplified fraction decimal and percentage was of each element of the park such as the percentage of playground. We got to choose if we did our parks on a 100 grid or narrow it down to a smaller, more challenging board, for example, you might use 84 squares.
Everyone has been very excited about making their own park in maths. All the students have done a great job and, the parks are even on display!

To add to our busy week in Maths we have done an excellent job of calculating different times of students in the swimming carnival (not our actual races). Everyone had so many questions and we had lots of fun. Some of the race times were using decimals and we had to practise ordering decimal numbers to find out who came first, second and last but not least…third.

Guided Inquiry
In Guided Inquiry, we have been exploring democracy and parliament. Last week we visited parliament to explore how bills are passed, but let's skip to this week. In this week we used our prior knowledge that we learnt last week to make our own country including a flag, passport and many more essential things that a country needs. Following this we also took a deeper look at the the golden mace we saw in parliament. Turns out it’s made of silver gilt and weighs approximately 7.8 kg. Remember it was used to protect the speaker! We looked at the Australian citizenship rights, laws and responsibilities for citizens and passports. So then all of us made a passport, flag and laws we made for our classroom and everyone enjoyed making lots of passports filling them out and saying the class oaths. Even the teachers enjoyed saying the pledge so we can repeat it to them. We all had so much fun with the activities!
All of the students had a blast in their classes making different versions of this lesson! For example 5/6GD made a pledge, flag, and passports for their class! We had so much fun adding twists to everything we made! Students made school passports and class passports while others made ID’s for the class. As time ticked by we started to prepare for the 5/6GD citizenship ceremony! The passport makers gave out the passports for each individual. At last it was time.
The royal music plays while Miss Glen stands on the couch with her thin, delicate 24 karat paper crown which was carefully crafted by students in 5/6GD. She called us out house by house and read the pledge made by the students.
"In the time I have in my wonderful class 5/6GD. I pledge my loyalty, participation and respect to 5/6GD and its spectacular Queens, Queen Glen and Queen Dawson. I will support student voice beliefs and laws and rules I will uphold and obey. I will answer and obey the calls of our queens and support everyone in class's opinions. By speaking this pledge I am devoting my kindness and respect to this amazing class!”
We repeated the pledge in unison. We are at last citizens of 5/6GD!
