Championship Swimming Carnival

On Friday 10 February Kinross Wolaroi held the annual Championship Swimming Carnival. Firstly, thanks must go to the staff who gave up their Friday afternoon to allow the students the opportunity to race. It was a big night for our swimmers with all of the 50m events as well as a 100m freestyle and a 200m freestyle and medley included. The students handled this very well and it is clear that Mr Lawrence has the swim squad in great shape.

On the night there was only one record to fall. Congratulations to Chloe McGilvray who broke the U16 girl’s breaststroke record. Our age champions will be acknowledged at an upcoming assembly.

The swimmers have a busy schedule coming up with Country Championships, WAS swimming and ISA swimming all on in the next few weeks. We wish them all the best as the season ramps up.

Musical – Little Shop of Horrors

The musical staff have been busy over the last few weeks with auditions for this year’s cast. An extremely talented cast has now been selected. Congratulations to all of you and we look forward to seeing the show in action later in the year.

Cattle Team

With new yards finished off and a wash bay out at Windermere we are up and running again with the cattle team. Excellent numbers have been turning up out to the school farm on a Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning. The cattle are looking fantastic with preparation well underway. It is exciting to see the students engaged in their passion and we look forward to the results in the upcoming shows.

Tennis report Round 8

A hot weekend didn’t seem to phase our ISA Tennis Team as we played out our matches in Bathurst this weekend. Our Team were up against our close competitors in the tournament, Scots All Saints College (SASC).

Our KWS Odds Team played against the SASC Odds and came away with a convincing 16-5 set win. Well done to Kaydn McLachlan, Charlie Poole, Ollie Wong, Alice MacDonald for winning their singles matches and a shout out to the team for winning all doubles matches.

Our KWS Evens Team played against SASC Evens and also had a strong win of 16-3 sets. Congratulations to Charlie Hall, Tim Dakin, Max Reidy, Heath Robinson, Will Steventon and Jack Steventon for winning all their singles matches.

A special mention also goes to Anna Orr for her debut in the team this weekend. She has just started in Year 7 this year and has been selected for the ISA Team. Anna had a great weekend of tennis and we welcome her.

A shout out to Kaydn McLachlan who competed in the Regional Match Play (RMS) competition in Bathurst and came runner up in his division- Well done!

Touch Football

KWS 7 (Camels) v Redlands 8

The started their game against Redlands 8 with high enthusiasm from their new team chant. Maya Doyle opened the scoring with a great break through the Redlands line before Rahni Jarick picked up a first half double to put the Camels in a strong position. Redlands hit back with long range tries of their own, but a great intercept try to Lucy Atkinson put the Camels up 4 - 2 a half time.

Despite the hot conditions the Camels all worked extremely hard for each other in the second half. Despite Redlands scoring two good tries, a third try to Rahni and a side-stepping try to Livvy Taylor kept the Camels in front. Two diving tries to Lily Smith and Neevey Graham finished the game well, with Camels taking the win.

KWS7 - 8 v RED8 - 4

KWS 8 v Barker 8

The Ducks came up against a Barker side that include some fast players. The Ducks worked hard in the hot conditions and defended well, but some poor ball handling kept the Ducks under pressure. Barker managed to score three first half tries, but a double to Alloway Whittle kept the Ducks in the game at half time.

The second half saw the Ducks work really hard in defence, including a great try-saving chase from Amy Pearce. The Ducks kept Barker scoreless in the second half, while a third try to Alloway brought the teams level before Olive Quigley scored the match-winner when she dived over the line. A great come from behind win to the Ducks.

KWS8 - 4 v RED8- 3

Alpacas

The girls first game they started well, competing against a young Wellington team that has great skill. We matched them most of the game, only losing by two points. Our next game against Redlands the girls got a great win. The energy was high from all the players and especially the two female gap staff they were great. Lucy was a great addition to the team as she lead the attack also with Lily Bruce and Scarlett. The middles and links then played there roles and defended well also. Our wingers melly, Jess and Sarah especially played very well great defence and enthusiasm.

Triathlon Report

The Triathlon team has been busy training, competing and preparing for the forthcoming All Schools Triathlon individual and team events.

Week 1 - Sunday 5 February, our first triathlon of 2023. Orange Triathlon Club provided us with a local event to kick off Term 1. Super sprint results: Ollie Krause 1st, Ashton Montagliani 3rd, Jess Thomson 4th, Imogen Christmas 5th, Clare Wood 6th, Felicity Knox 7th, Isobella Montagliani 8th, Charlotte England 10th. Sprint results: Will Ward 4th, Sophie Martin 5th.

Week 2 – Sunday 12 February saw our students competing against the best in the Central West. The Central West Inter Club Series event included athletes of all ages from Cowra, Dubbo, Mudgee, Bathurst and Orange battling it out to earn points for their respective clubs.

The Kinross Wolaroi team all earned participation points for OTC and some podium places earned extra points. In the Women’s Super Sprint: 1st place Zoe Wood, 2nd place Jess Thompson, 3rd place Imogen Christmas. In the Men’s Super Sprint: 2nd place Ollie Krause.

A special mention to George Hogg who competed in the external Sprint race. George got a flat tyre at the beginning of the 23km cycle, changed his tyre then battled with some gear related issues. George could have pulled out of the race but that’s not his style. Whilst is might not have been his best race he still completed the 540m swim, 23km ride, 4.4km run. A demonstration of the grit and resilience that we talk about at school - in action. Also showing great Kinross Wolaroi spirit, Charlie Harris, who came out to see his first triathlon and ended up doing a super job marshalling at transition.

Week 3 – On Friday 17 February we joined OTC for their final Twilight Triathlon of the season. This has been a great new initiative of the OTC encouraging anyone curious or interested in triathlon to come along and enjoy a supportive environment in which to try out a new sport or just have a training hit out. We took advantage of the timing to have a practice for our forthcoming All Schools Triathlon Team event. Many of our extra swimmers and runners came and joined the Kinross Wolaroi Triathlon Team at Gosling Creek for three mini triathlons (270m swim, 4km cycle, 800m run, repeat x 3). Great fun and team bonding concluding with the ubiquitous sausage sizzle and zooper doopers.

Please wish our Triathlon Team the best of luck. All Schools Triathlon is at Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith:

Tennis Report Round 9

Kinross Wolaroi travelled to Lithgow last weekend to play against one of their biggest sporting rivals, St Stanislaus' College (SSC). Although our players had a very early start and hot conditions to play in, this didn’t seem to dampen their effort or spirits.

KWS Odds were up against SSC Odds and played very strongly in both the doubles and singles matches, with the final result seeing us victorious 17 sets -3 sets. All players in the Odds team including Kaydn McLachlan, Charlie Poole, Ollie Wong, Max Reidy, Jack Steventon and Milli Mackay won their singles match which is a wonderful result. A special mention goes to Kaydn for winning both sets 4-0 and to Charlie Poole for winning his tie-break in the longest match of the day.

KWS Evens were up against SSC Evens and had their work cut out for them. All players in the Evens team including Charlie Hall, Tim Dakin, Heath Robinson, Guy Ross, Will Steventon and Hayden McKenzie put in an outstanding effort and brought home the win 12 sets-6 sets. A special mention goes to Will and Hayden for winning their doubles sets 4-0 and Will also had the same score in his singles.

Swimming - NSW Country Championships 2023

Friday 17 February - Sunday 19 February, Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre

Congratulations to the 19 Kinross Wolaroi Swim Club members who competed over the weekend at the Swimming NSW Country Championships in Sydney.

NSW Country Championships provides a fantastic opportunity for the best of NSW country based swimmers to compete at Sydney Olympic Park, a significant step up from racing regionally. Our swimmers showed great composure in executing race plans, displaying great confidence in their abilities individually and as a team. The KWS Swim Team placed 11th overall in the State, which is a highly commendable achievement considering the relative size of our representative team. Out of 105 swims, our swimmers placed inside the top 10 a staggering 40 times (38%) with a PB percentage of approximately 60%. Congratulations to the following medal winners:

A special mention goes to Charlotte Williams, who was selected for the NSW Junior Development Program, based on of her performances at the Country Championships. Charlotte will take part in a couple of training days in Sydney with 23 other junior athletes from our state. A terrific accolade for all her hard work and dedications=.

Finally, thank you to Jane Gillham and our terrific parent body for their commitment and care for our swimmers. Without your trust and dedication we would not be on the upward trajectory that we are on. Exciting things to come!

Cricket Report

Week 4, Term 1

Welcome back to Cricket for 2023! Three weeks of competition have come and gone, and it’s great to see our cricketers back on the field competing after their summer hiatus. There has been much to report on over the summer holidays, with various representative tournaments taking place – not to mention the Test Cricket on the television! All information regarding Kinross Wolaroi School Representative players will be released in the end of season MIC report, and within The Tower yearbook report for Cricket.

Pleasingly, over the summer break we have seen a rise in the number of students choosing to play cricket, both those new to Kinross Wolaroi, and new to cricket. Whilst this is a fantastic thing for our cricket program, it has caused some issues for our junior teams – in particular, our Under 14s. I have been in contact with the ODJCA regarding adding a non-competitive team to fill in bye weekends and am yet to hear anything in response. It is my goal that all students are involved in cricket each weekend. To facilitate this, any players not selected each week in either the Sixers or Thunder will be involved in cricket, be it; training, small sided games or a full T20 match. I appreciate your patience on this matter as we work to find the best solution for the remainder of the season.

Looking forward, it’s exciting to see a range of our teams in contention for finals cricket – yes, it’s that time of the season already! Moreover, seeing so many players enjoying their cricket and spending time with their friends in the sun on a Saturday morning is a reminder of why parents, coaches and our students give up their time to play this great game. Good luck to all in their upcoming fixtures this week.

I look forward to seeing you around the boundaries this weekend,

Will Waterson

Week 2 Reports

1st XI vs Centrals

Kinross sent Centrals in after winning the toss on a pretty standard main oval pitch. Condon and Prowse opened the bowling and a little bit of movement helped keep the visitors none for not many after the first 12. Tom Patton and Harry Priest bowled into drinks taking with them a runout from Priest off his own bowling. Tight spin bowling from Byrne, Anderson and Shepherd led to 3 wickets gradually falling, until some big hitting from Centrals and 2 final wickets from Condon and Prowse left them 6-164.

An excellent opening partnership from Byrne (47) and Prowse (19) that didn’t end until after drinks set up a strong start for Kinross. Shepherd (52) came in after Prowse and continued the strong batting, and kept the run rate to one a ball consistently, until a set Byrne departed trying to release some scoring pressure. Priest came and went, again trying to take off some scoreboard pressure but getting caught on the boundary. This brought Condon in who left for 19 after a few overs, Brazier came and departed for 2 and Waterson (13*) entered who stuck around until Shepherd hit the winning runs off the third last ball, winning the game and bringing up his fifty.

This win builds confidence in our team heading into the last rounds as we look to secure a place in the semi-finals

Harry Priest and Charlie Condon

Cricket Captain and Vice-Captain

U15 KWS v Cavaliers

As we creep closer towards the finals, each team is looking to cement their spot in the finals. We went into the toss and cavaliers won and elected to bat. KWS started the innings well with some wickets from Ollie Wilson (2 for 7 after 4) and Sam Spliet (1 for 20 after 4). There were a few missed chances in the field which led to Cavaliers to a score of 5-128.

It was tough going from the start for us, with Kinross losing constant wickets throughout the innings. Ollie Wilson taking out the highest score for Kinross with a total of 17 off 22, Kinross were bowled out for 70 after 24 overs.

Man of the match went to Ollie Wilson for his 2 wickets and top score of 17.

Charlie Miller - Under 15s Captain

U14 KWS Sixers vs Orange CYMS Gold

It was a big game as we faced a must win (to contend for finals) game against the Gold of CYMS. Kinross won the toss and selected to bat first. Kinross started well before Thomas Mason was dismissed for 4. Charles O’Brien (12) and Marco Orme-Smith (0) were both dismissed within the same over, before Parker Lamond and Fetcher Byrne started to steady the ship. Parker was caught for 2, after digging in and protecting his wicket. As Charlie Miller strode to the crease, KWS needed a partnership – and this is what was delivered through some expansive stroke play between Miller (9) and Byrne (50), adding 55 together.

Henry Leulf andt Marco Orme-Smith started very well with very tight bowling at the start of CYMS innings. The game was then turned with Oliver Garard’s got a brilliant 6/5. Mentions also to Parker and taking a wicket – reward for some great bowling. Kinross ending winners by 89 runs.

Thanks to all the parents for scoring and to Mr. Kerridge for making the game possible.

Fletcher Byrne - Under 14 Sixers Captain

Rowing

On the weekend Kinross Wolaroi rowing travelled to the International Regatta Centre in Penrith for the 2023 NSW State Championships.

Our 66-strong team competed in a variety of events across all underage and school categories. The overall entry numbers were up 35% from the previous year as the sport recovers from COVID. The competition was fierce, with many interstate crews in attendance, making this year's State Championships effectively a national level regatta.

The Kinross Wolaroi squad performed well across both the girls’ and boys’ programs; with the boys bringing home 1 bronze, 3 silvers and 1 gold medal and the girls bringing home 5 silvers and 1 gold medal. The school totalling 11 medals.

The school finished 10th on the medal table behind 9 clubs from around the country, meaning that Kinross finished as the top placed school overall, and top girls’ and boys’ school overall. A remarkable achievement.

One of the many highlights of the weekend was the boys' Year 9 quad who competed in the Men’s Under 16 Quad race. The race started and four crews presented themselves at the front of the pack, Kinross being one of them. The race finished with only 1.34 seconds separating 1st and 4th, in a hotly contested race. With a photo finish required to decide the result, Shore ended up taking the win, followed by Newington and Redlands with Kinross Wolaroi finishing fourth.

Although there were some great results from the weekend there were a few races where we fell short, albeit through no lack of effort of determination. This is something everyone must learn is a part of sport and competition. It was great to see a smaller program from the country compete with the large boys’ and girls’ independent schools from Sydney . Kinross Wolaroi rowers continue to progress and present as one of the stronger schools in NSW Rowing.

The squad now continue training in the lead up to the boys and girls Head of the River regattas later in March before a selected squad attend the National Championships in Perth in April.

Congratulations to the entire Kinross Wolaroi School rowing squad for their outstanding efforts on the weekend.
