2023 Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all participants in the swimming carnival this year. There were some impressive performances throughout the day. Age champions and the HICES team will be announced in assembly with the top two fastest qualifiers heading to HICES on 7 March at Homebush. We wish all swimmers well as they represent the school at the next level.

An event like this does not run without the support of a team of people. Many thanks to all involved: the class teachers, specialists, grounds and maintenance staff, gap year students, Year 10 students who assisted with timing on the day, as well as Brandon and Brooke from the swimming coaching staff.

This year the staff took out 2nd place in the invitational race to finish the day, letting go their strangle hold on a shield that has been won for the last 14 years straight. Maybe it was a slow 3rd leg from Mr Tyack that let the team down.. too many weights, not enough cardio?

Basketball

09.02.23 -  Eye of the Tiger

“Don’t be afraid of failure. This is the way to succeed” – LeBron James

It is the closest games that hit the heartstrings hard when you go down by a few. But it is these close games that bind a team together and provide a launching pad for future success.

Thursday 9 February on Court 4 at the PCYC, a battle of old fashioned basketball went down as one for the ages. The KWS Lakers started a little shaky as we hit center court at prime time for the first time in 2023. Some excellent layups helped build momentum and holding fouls to a low ensured we applied pressure to the opposition.

With the scoreboard leaders changing every minute, it wasn’t our time as the clock counted down for the final 8.

This team should be extremely proud of their success to date. They represent the school with class, determination and prowess. We look ahead to a clash of the top of the table next week. Even though we may have lost by 2 this week, a win by 2 next will make the victory taste that bit more sweet.

16.02.23 -  Roar

“You can’t win unless you learn how to lose” – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Two options, three shoot through. Two options, three shoot through. Two options, three shoot through. The game plan echoed through the courts and bellowed to the beat of the ball. Today at 5:40pm, we heard the Lakers roar. Never mind a match report for this week, we need a podcast. Words can’t describe a win by 2 against the top of the table.

An excellent display by all teammates. The Lakers attacked with grit and defended with heart and soul. We had our opponents clutching for breath as the Lakers attacked with options and speed. We held our foul tally to a low and forced the opponents to a high, converting on the majority of 2 free throws.

With the scoreboard even at the end of the second and third quarters, it was anyone’s game in the final 8. 2 options, 3 shoot through and a few quick subs saw the Lakers fulfil the fable and win by 2! The sky is the limit in the games to come.
