During the holidays, Mezen and Zaro Jalal enjoyed a wonderful week of music-making with hundreds of musicians from all over NSW. The sessions were led by some of Australia’s finest conductors where the boys experienced playing in large groups honing their technique, listening and ensemble skills. The program concluded with a concert at the prestigious Sydney Town Hall. Congratulations to Mezen & Zaro for taking up this fabulous opportunity to spend some of their summer holidays developing their musical skills. It was clearly a great experience for them both.
At SYO, we played a variety of difficult pieces which used many different types of styles of music alongside some very talented conductors who taught us many different things about the history of music.
Zaro
My favourite thing about SYO is the song Digital Dash because the whole song is pizzicato!
Mezen
Our ensembles are settling in well to rehearsal with lots of wonderful music happening. Here are our String Quartet working through some new repertoire with Director, Ms Irik.
Here we have our very talented Year 3 students who have been exploring rhythms and melodies with a Chinese New Year theme over the last few weeks.
Mrs Whiteley’s class performed an English translation of Chinese song called Gong Xi (gōng xǐ fā cái) meaning Congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year! Students learned a repeated descending melodic pattern as well as a two note drone on the xylophone which they performed whilst singing the song.
Miss Sleeman’s class experimented with spoken ostinato using a combination of Chinese symbols with references to New Year celebrations (coin, lantern, dragon, fan). Students read rhythms using these symbols, identifying whether they were ta (one) sounds or ti-ti (two) rhythms. They turned them into an ostinato (a repeated pattern) then layered them into a performance with 4 groups performing different ostinato at the same time, whilst keeping the beat on their knees at the same time!
Very impressive performances by our Year 3’s!
