LOTE

As part of our assessment, we, the Unit 1/2 English Language students delivered a presentation to each of the Year 9 Italian and Indonesian classes. This was in order to encourage the continuation of LOTE beyond year 9 and through to the older year levels. English language (otherwise known as linguistics) is one of the three main English courses offered at Marian, which explores the study of language in all its aspects including structure, diversity, and how language has, and continues to change and evolve over time.

Throughout this first semester, we have studied a wide range of topics such as the linguistic subsystems, purposes and functions of language itself as well as the stages and relevant theories regarding child language acquisition. The English Language students worked collaboratively in small groups in order to complete this task; advocating LOTE’s prominence within society, therefore recognising how it is a beneficial subject for future years. This was promoted through specifically discussing the benefits of language learning and its implications to everyday tasks as well as some strategies, which the students could use to develop their study skills. We incorporated a mix of theory, videos, games, visuals and interactive activities to accommodate to the range of different learning styles and provide an engaging experience for the year 9 LOTE students.
