Grade 5 Snapshot-Term 3
Week 4 & 5
In writing this week, students have been focusing on the writing process, by writing information reports on The Olympics. This time they will be writing a booklet and they will have a different audience (students will give it to their buddies). Therefore students have been thinking about keeping their writing more simple this time and including things like a glossary to help their audience understand. They have worked through the Pre write, planning and drafting stages. Next week they will revise, edit and publish their writing.
The Writing Process:
Pre Write stage- Students brainstormed what they knew about the Olympics and created a mind map.
Planning- Students researched, using multiple websites and videos, summarising the information as they went. They used dot points to record this information under each of their sub headings.
Drafting- Students created a booklet, putting their information into different sections and under different sub headings.
Revising- Students will go through their draft carefully. They will add, remove, move and substitute words and sentences to improve their piece.
Editing- Students will then edit their report to correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Publish- Students will publish their booklet in slides. Adding all their revisions and edits and typing it up carefully. They will also add pictures, headings and diagrams.
This week in Reading students used a Venn Diagram to look at the similarities and differences between summarising and synthesising. They applied both these strategies while reading and watching digital non-fiction texts, e.g. Kids News and BTN. By sketching and adding detail to their sketches they have been able to show their understanding and comprehension. Next week, students will continue their Guided Reading Groups and working on their Reading goals. They will also look at different digital non-fiction texts to continue to practise their synthesising.
This week in Maths we created fraction number lines and used different lengths of string to demonstrate our understanding that fractions are equal parts of a whole. We then used our knowledge of equivalent fractions to make playdough as a class. After making playdough, students looked at different recipes online and used equivalent fractions to solve problems. Next week, we will continue looking at equivalent fractions through a range of activities and learning tasks.
This week the students have been working hard on their Paper Products for our "Mini Market Day". They learnt about profit and loss and created their own financial plans. We then set up a classroom simulation where the students had to use "money" to buy the materials needed for their product. Next week, students will design support material for their stall when we return to school. This will include, an online advertisement, signage and pricing information.
