Debating

On Monday night our team were proud to represent the School in the Grand Final of the Western Australian Debating League competition. Speakers on the night were River Waters, Phoebe Thompson and Dannielle Frost. In attendance were their teammates, Olivia North who chaired the debate, Hardy Croucher who chaired the novice Debate for the St Joseph’s team and Chelsea Evans, fresh from a win at a hockey game!

I couldn’t have been more proud of the preparation and presentation of our speakers and they certainly came out as winners as they contested a strong Affirmative team from Australian Christian College with the argument; that businesses should seek out information on and take responsibility for the mental health of their employees; e.g. pay for therapy appointments. The adjudicators awarded the debate to the affirmative team (ACC) but we stand proud and celebrate our achievement in being awarded Runners Up with medallions to be presented in due course.

Thank you to Mr Sawle, Mr Scott and Ms Leiper who supported us on the night as well as each and every family member who braved the cold to cheer on our heroes.

Earlier that same day, our speakers presented a mock debate to the Whole School assembly and it was wonderful to be able to offer a taste of the art of rhetoric (and the bold heroism that it represents), to the school community.

Congratulations to each one of you for the commitment and perseverance that you demonstrated as you worked through the season, researching topics about which you spoke for or against. It’s been a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic, funny and clever group of kind-hearted warriors of the spoken word. Let’s now enjoy the chocolate rewards and look forward to more speakers joining us for next year’s season!

Baudin Fundraising Day

What a way to enjoy recess at School, have a massive cake sale and see everyone from Kindy to Year Twelve come together and buy some cake for a very good cause, Baudin’s fundraising day.

A big thank you has to go to the families of Baudin House who made and supplied a vast range of different cakes and cookies for sale. The leaders in Baudin from Middle School and Senior School had an intense 10 to 15 minutes of selling.

Tola - Cambodia

Baudin’s fundraising day is to raise money for a student named Tola that we help go to school in Cambodia. We also had a theme of 'Pink for the Day' to raise money for breast cancer. The aim is to support or donate as much money as we can to different organisations who work with breast cancer.  Over the last two years we have donated to Breast Cancer Research WA and the Jane McGrath Foundation and this year we are donating to a local charity in Albany called Solaris Cancer Care.

Thank you all the students who bought in some money to support our cause.
