Bringing Learning to Life
This week’s assembly was led by the Junior School and focused on Bringing Learning to Life.
A number of Year One students introduced their enquiry-based learning projects to the School and were carried around by the Year Five students. This was followed by the Year Fives who outlined their experience of biodiversity during Science Day with a series of slides, narrative and video. Complementing these displays came a summary of Year Ten Work Experience Week, where stories were told of students participating in a variety of businesses. These included students who were experiencing workplace learning in hospitality at Dunsborough, caring for turtles in Shark Bay, informing tourists of activities at the Albany Tourist Bureau, while other students attended trades and businesses in Albany and WA. All of these work-place activities were coordinated by Mrs Renae O’Donnell, VET and Careers Coordinator.
Head of Wilson House, Ms Angelina Ross, spoke about the wonderful opportunities some of the students have experienced through the Enrichment and Extension program. Activities highlighted were the Da Vinci Decathlon, Think Tank Challenge, Children’s University, the Holiday Program, Write a Book in a Day, raising money for the Kids Cancer Project and STEAM elective. Some of the opportunities the students were provided with were molecular gastronomy, strawberry DNA identification and organised activities through the University of Western Australia .
Debating
I was fortunate enough to attend the finals of the WA Debating League. A number of GSG teams competed this year with one junior team advancing to the grand final. Debating provides an opportunity to collectively debate relevant topics in a public forum. Congratulations to those students who were involved and special thanks to Ms Valda Wieland who coordinated this year's season. Read more in Whole School News.

This event is open to the wider community and provides an exciting opportunity for networking and socialising. We are seeking GSG sponsors for this highly anticipated event. To express your interest or for further information please contact Community Relations Manager, Mrs Julia Bairstow, via julia.bairstow@gsg.wa.edu.au
As part of Danny’s visit, he will also be speaking to students prior to the Afternoon Tea on issues dealing with resilience, self-respect and confidence. It will be wonderful for parents to listen to Danny and relate to some of his life experiences at home with their children.
