Marysville Camp

Somehow, in between all of the lockdowns, we were able to squeeze in a camp! August 16th to 20th saw almost all of our Year 9 students travel together to Marysville for what is sure to be one of their highlights of Year 9.

Students participated in a range of activities over the five days including: hiking, biking, bush skills, team initiatives, skiing, tobogganing, snowman building, snowball throwing, rock climbing, abseiling and cultural activities. The students also enjoyed a variety of games at night which, if the laughs were anything to go by, were also a highlight.

It was a great opportunity for the students to explore, push their comfort zones and learn about themselves, the people and the world around them, and have fun throughout the process.

On behalf of the Year 9s, we would like to thank the following teachers: Mr. Green, Mr. Tatchell, Miss Dridan and Mr. De Zoete-Spiero. These teachers gave generously of their time and without their support, the camp would not have been the success it was.

The students made the following comments about their time away:

  • I enjoyed making new friendships that I hope to keep.
  • I loved being able to revisit the snow.
  • I enjoyed the food, especially the hamburger at lunchtime.
  • I enjoyed going to the snow – the tobogganing was awesome!
  • I liked the snow, and bet I was the winner of slipping over the most!
  • I enjoyed rock climbing, and made it to the top of the rock wall twice.
  • I enjoyed making soap from the leaves of the Acacia melanoxylon, commonly known as the Australian blackwood.
  • I enjoyed going for the walk to Steavensons Falls.
  • I enjoyed taking on the puddle challenge during the bike ride and having a snowball fight.
  • Climbing the slopes at the snow was awful, but well and truly worth it when it was time to go down them.
  • I enjoyed the skiing and abseiling, as I had never done either before – they both really challenged me.
  • I enjoyed making sparks and fire with the flint and cotton ball.
  • I enjoyed getting to hang out with friends for a whole week!
  • There were a lot of great things about camp, but if I had to choose, I would say abseiling or skiing because it was something new, challenging and fun.
