STEM & Digi Tech News

I have run a bunch of live STEM sessions on MS Teams over the past week and a half with various grades from different year levels. I must admit, it has been a real joy and given me a real lift. It has stirred my passion for teaching even more at such a strange time of the year and called on a range of my skills to make it work well.  I’m so glad that I gave it a crack.

The kids I have taught in these sessions have been amazing. They have been polite, engaged, insightful, fun, respectful and really savvy with the technology. I tip my hat to all of the classroom teachers at OGPS because they have set this standard for them and taught them. I also tip my hat to all of the parents and carers at home. Without them facilitating the opportunity for their children and helping them access the technology safely, we all wouldn’t get this chance to continue our learning together. Bravo to the OGPS families!

And make no mistake, although remote learning is not ideal, these skills that the students are learning and showcasing through MS Teams is only going to benefit their learning and their experience for when they have to call upon these skills again as they grow up. And it won’t always go so well but it’s the lessons they learn from it and how they adapt their skills to move on that will count in the long run. This is the way our world is.

Last week and this week I’ve been running some STEM photography sessions with Year 6 on MS Teams. We explored silhouettes. Below are some samples of what the students submitted during the live sessions. First time trying these features for most of them. I was blown away by their creativity and was so proud of them.
