International Women's Day

International Women's Day happens on 8th March. It’s a day to acknowledge and honour women all around the world for political, cultural and social achievements. International Women’s Day (IWD) was first observed in the early 1900s when women wanted to have a louder voice in the world, and in 1909 27 states in America commemorated this day. Throughout the years of celebrating this, IWD has become a day where the history of women is explored and recognised. On this day people wear purple for justice and dignity, green for hope, or white to signify purity; this is the sign of equality for women.

The SRC created a display this year, with the help of the librarians and library monitors. The display is made up of nearly 100 purple speech bubbles filled with the names of women, from mums to public figures who inspire our students and staff.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Leadership Conference Excursion

On the 10th of March, along with 4 other members of the SRC, I got the opportunity to attend the Youth Leadership Academy Australia (YLAA) conference at the IBIS hotel in the city. The conference was about inspiring and empowering young leaders.

Throughout the day, we focused on four key ideas -  teamwork, entrepreneurship, communication and of course leadership. As part of the program, we heard from various speakers, who are part of the YLAA program. They told us about their past experiences, life at school and their careers.

Most of the guest speakers admitted that they had difficulties with fitting in and belonging at school. As a result of that, some were diagnosed with different conditions, such as insomnia, anxiety and depression, which made it hard for them to continue school. Because of this they all felt the need to help other young people to not have to go through the challenges they did and they began this organisation as a way to achieve this.

I feel like I have gained so much from this experience and can definitely use some of the tips I learnt to help myself and  inspire others to become leaders and to make a difference.

Food Technology

For the past two weeks, we have been learning all about France and its food. In one class, we learnt how to make the choux pasty for the Croquembouche, and then the following week we assembled it. We’ve learnt many new skills such as how to make choux pastry, piping techniques and how to make custard and toffee. It has been great fun learning how to make a Croquembouche!
