Dear Parents, Students and Friends

This time of year the College has many community events that bring us together to celebrate and reflect on moments of personal and collective achievements. Each is an expression of our desire to stand together and showcase of  gifts and talents and along the way we have some  fun, led by  youthful exuberance!

Last Friday the Class of 2018 celebrated with family, friends and staff for the final time at the Graduation Mass and Formal. It was a wonderful evening and I thank everyone involved. I mentioned on the night that there are over 550 people who attend and the work behind the scenes is similar to organising a large wedding! My thanks to everyone involved.

Last night, the Creative and Performing Arts Department held the Annual Creative Arts Showcase Night. Our talented students and staff provided an evening of relaxed entertainment for an appreciative audience. Thanks to the amazing students and staff of the CAPA Team.

Today the Marian Catholic Community came together to have our Annual Project Sam(oa) Day and Colour Fun Run. My thanks to staff members Sanita Lole and Sue Hone and all our Samoan and Polynesian students and their families who provided most of the entertainment and traditional Samoan food and drinks. They were supported by an enthusiastic Student Leadership team and once again by Mr Segrave and the Music Department.

The Colour run was organised by Mr Neville and students from the Community Action Team. Having taken students and staff to our two Samoan schools we support, St Peter’s Primary School and Paul VI Secondary College I know first hand that these schools are very poorly resourced and need our help. Catholic Education in Samoa receives little government financial support. The schools lack most of the items we take for granted at our schools. What they don’t lack is a desire for learning and dedicated staff. Our financial help goes a long way to providing items they would never be able to acquire. This includes text books and electronic equipment.

At our College Assembly yesterday College Vice Captain, Julian Davidge addressed the community about the Farmer’s Market fundraiser held last term.

Julian’s speech

Good morning everyone.  Before we begin today, we would just like to make a quick mention of the results of our school's Farmer's Market.

A few weeks ago, we began raising funds for drought-stricken Australian Farmers.  Out here, we understand better than anyone how much of an impact the drought can have.  Our initial goal was a respectable $1000, which we quickly reached.  From there, we pushed for $2000, which we also achieved with ease.

By the end of our fundraiser, the result was undeniably beyond any prediction.  From the efforts of the students, staff and wider community , we were able to raise $5700 dollars total.  This amount, though impressive alone, has yielded even more impressive results; it will be enough to pay for an entire trailer of feed for farmers.

The fundraiser is a testament to the spirit of the Marian community.  Through our collective efforts, we have made a real impact on the lives of those suffering.  Thank you to everyone for contributing your time, effort and money.

Special thanks also go out the Year Co-ordinators, whose efforts meant that each week of fundraising continued to propel our goal onwards.  Everyone should leave the hall content that they have left a meaningful impact to the lives of both our own and wider Australian community.

Finally, I congratulate Mrs Tonetta Iannelli who has be appointed Co-Assistant Principal of St Francis De Sales Regional College from the commencement of the 2019 school year. Tonetta will greatly missed at Marian and on behalf of our community I thank her for her contribution to learning at Marian and wish her every success and blessing on the next stage of her leadership journey in Catholic Education .

Peace and Best Wishes
