It has been a very smooth and productive start back at school for the Junior Years. The College has welcomed six new students and their families across Prep to Year 4 and we wish them all the best as they begin their school journey at Good News.
The younger students have been enjoying using some new loose parts play equipment, which allows them opportunities for more imaginative play which involves lots of gross motor skill practice.
At the beginning of a Term, teachers regularly revisit with students the agreements and expectations they have for student behaviour. These consistent behaviours lead to a greater focus on learning which in turn, results in growth and achievement which has the bonus of students visibly seeing the progress they are making.
One of the reminders teachers have been going back to is the use of the ‘High 5’ strategy to assist students with problem-solving when dealing with unwanted or inappropriate behaviour from others.
It is a 5 step problem-solving strategy that can be used in the classroom, as well as in the playground. It is used to foster better relationships, personal achievement, and improved student wellbeing. It assists with building resilience and social skills. Over time, it has a positive impact and helps shape and build on the College Values of Respect, Grace, Courage, and Integrity.
Staff will spend time teaching students the skills which will empower them to take responsibility for themselves and give them the power to practice these skills. We want to promote proactive strategies, to prevent small incidents from becoming major issues.
As part of the process, children need to know the difference between reporting and dobbing:
Reporting is helping/getting yourself out of trouble.
Dobbing is trying to get someone else in trouble using a whiny voice!
Reporting:
We encourage parents to support their children by using the language in the steps from the poster above, to help them solve problems effectively. Already, teachers are hearing Prep students use the language as they practice doing the High 5!
Success occurs when children can not only talk the talk … but walk the walk.
During last Term, many lost items were collected. Most common are plastic containers and school uniform pieces, in particular jumpers. Please name ALL items that your children bring to school, so that they can be returned to them if they become lost or are accidentally picked up by another student.
