Stage 1

The first four weeks have been jam packed with exciting

 activities in Stage One.

This term, as part of NAIDOC Week, Stage 1 went on an excursion to the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place.  Bob, who works at the centre, taught us about Aboriginal language and history. We were lucky enough to see and learn about many interesting artefacts including hunting tools, indigenous artworks, instruments and much more. We were really impressed by Bob’s fantastic didgeridoo playing!  Stage 1 really got into the spirit of the place and learned how to do some traditional Aboriginal dances.  We dressed for the occasion by grinding special rocks to make chalk which we used to paint our faces.  We had the best time and would like to thank Bob and all those at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre for giving us such an amazing experience.

This week was Science Week.  We were so privileged to have students from Drummond School to introduce us to a variety of robots.  We discovered they were a great tool for teaching sequencing, problem-solving, and just having fun!

This is called a Beebot. We learnt sign language. Then trained our Beebot to move to the Auslan emotion cards.

This is called a Dashbot. Stage One bought this robot to life by coding so that they could deliver a secret message to their friend.

We Do Kits

Stage One created a creature out of lego.  They needed to follow step-by step instructions using an i-pad.

In the Magpie classroom we have been studying a picture book called ‘A wall in the middle of the Book’ and learning a poem called ‘An ogre came over for dinner’.  We discussed the ogre’s behaviour in the poem compared with the ogre in the book.  We talked about how past tense vocabulary is used in both texts.  Below are some great recounts telling about how an ogre arrived at their party.

You Can Do It

This term our YCDI focus is to be Emotionally Resilient. This can be a hard habit of the mind to achieve even as adults.

We will be focusing on what it looks like to use a positive habit of the mind when being resilient.

Examples of Emotional Resilience can be;

• Not getting overly upset from mistakes in your work or when you have not been as successful as you would like to be.

• Not getting overly frustrated and angry with yourself when you do not understand something.

• Not getting down when your friends seem to understand their schoolwork and do better on tests than you.

• Avoiding getting extremely worried before an important test or event in which you have to perform in public.

• Avoiding excessive worry concerning your popularity with peers.

• Not getting overly angry when peers are mean to you.

• Remaining calm and in control when an adult treats you unfairly or disrespectfully.

• Not getting too down when being teased or ignored by friends.

• When meeting someone new, not getting extremely nervous and being calm.

• Stopping yourself from getting extremely worked up when you want to stand up and say “No” to someone who is putting pressure on you to do the wrong thing.

• Not losing your cool when you have lots of homework to do.

• Staying in control when your parents say “No” and the parents of your friends seem to be saying “Yes.”
