Tree Planting Excursion

This term, the Year 3 and 4 Community is learning about Sustainability. Their unit is titled The Power is in our hands - How can we better manage planet Earth? They are learning to consider the impact our actions have on the Earth.

As part of this learning, last week they went on an incursion to Cruickshank Park to take part in some tree planting. Martin from Maribyrnong City Council guided the children through a talk and the tree planting. He spoke about the importance of planting native trees to attract birds to the area as well as provide food and habitats for animals. Martin also taught the children about tree guards that we see in our parks.

The tree planting was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. They learned about why it is important to plant a tree properly using enough soil to cover the roots as well as using mulch around the plant.

Back at school, the children drew what they saw at the park, they also interviewed each other about the excursion.

National Tree Day

Established in 1996 by Planet Ark, National Tree Day has grown into Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event. The program is a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to their community.

Each year, around 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate Australians about the world around them. While every day can be Tree Day, the last Friday and last Sunday in July are dedicated to the celebration of Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day. It's a day to venture outdoors, get to know your community, and most importantly, have fun!
