100 Days of school! What a milestone and what a celebration. We are so proud of the Preps and all that they have achieved in their first 100 days of school.

In week 4 we wrapped up Phase 4 of Smart Spelling looking at the letters: z, y, w, x, v and the 9 common words: do, our, Mum, Dad, said, look, at, next, your.

In Reading, we have continued to explore fairy tales reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Gingerbread Man. We have been learning how to use details from the beginning, middle and end to retell a story in the sequence including details such as the characters, setting, problem and solution.

In Writing in week 3, we looked at how to use adjectives to describe a character and a setting. In week 4 we used familiar fairy tales to re-write and create our own beginning, middle and end.

In Maths, we have learning all about numbers to 20 and how to connect number names to numerals and groups. We practised counting forwards and backwards and writing different numbers to 20. In week 4 we looked at ordinal number and how we can order the numbers to 20. It was great fun racing cars and ordering who came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on.

Level 1/2

Wow! Time really does fly when you’re having fun and doing lots of learning. The recent sunshine has enabled the whole level to come together, make new connections and enjoy level sport on Tuesday afternoons.

Literacy sessions have been very busy and full of new learning. We have read and watched a range of texts and used our own experiences to make inferences. In Writing, students have demonstrated amazing creativity and effort to compose their very own imaginative narratives too!

Maths has been full of measuring and comparing as students have investigated the topics of Length and Area.

We are loving our weekly Science sessions. The Grade 1s are learning about First Nations Scientists and the Grade 2s have been exploring solids, liquids, gases and mixtures. We can’t wait for Science Night!

In I-Time, the Grade Ones have been discovering how their Maths skills apply to the French bakery, Shoe Shop, Italian Pizza shop and blocks areas. Grade Twos are continuing to learn about a range of different cultures in Inquiry. Soon your child may be able to teach you a game from another country!

Level 3/4 News

4 weeks of Term 3 have already flown by! Thankyou to those of you who joined us on our 3 Way Conferences last week. It was great hearing students talk about their learning and their goals for the rest of the year.

In Reading, students have been starting to look at different types of poetry. They are working on understanding that the purpose of poetry is to engage and excite the imagination of the reader, or to stir an emotional response within them. They have identified different types of poetry. Students have also learnt to understand that poetry can be structured or unstructured, long or short, funny or sad, rhyming or non-rhyming. It is up to the poet to decide!

In Writing students have been looking at different types of poetry and have started exploring figurative language such as idioms, similies, metaphors, hyperboles and personification. Students also had a chance to continue working on the picture story books that they have created. Many are starting to finish these and we are so proud of how much effort they have put into them.

The last two weeks in Maths students have started looking at the topic of Chance. We have played a lot of chance games involving dice and cards. A favourite chance game is always greedy pig. We have had lots of discussion about chance events being unlikely, likely, impossible and certain and students have sorted these events accordingly.

In Science students have been exploring solids and liquids and there freezing temperatures. They have been doing a lot of hypothesising and then recording their results.

Our Inquiry unit this term 'In Someone Else's Shoes' involves students learning about social justice, disabilities and aides that help certain disabilities. Next week we have a special guest who uses a wheelchair coming to speak to all of the level 3/4 students.

On Wednesday the 3rd of August the Level 3/4 students went to Karalaka Theatre to watch the Mooroolbark Collage students perform 'We Will Rock You'. It was a loud rock and roll experience!

Level 5/6 News

In level 5/6 we have been doing African drumming with Kofi. We have been using all different types of drums. At the end of term, we will be having a performance, and it is an amazing experience.

In the last few weeks, we have been learning about fractions decimals and percentages. We have focused on making a decimal into a percentage and percentages into decimals. We are also focusing on finding the price of a product when there is a percentage discount. We love learning about fractions.

This Term we are studying a novel and looking at how the author uses their craft to create amazing stories. ‘Boy Overboard’ is a novel book about Jamal, Bibi and their parents trying to escape their government. However, Jamal and Bibi have their own plan: to win the world cup. Their amazing adventure includes Landmines, Asians, and more… Boy Overboard was created by Morris Gleitzman, the book has forty-two chapters. We have learnt that Bibi has her mother’s genes and is a part desert warrior, Jamal is more like his father and is more like a baker. The story is both sad and exciting.

The flamenco dancing was an amazing experience. It was a dancer who came from France, it was amazing. She showed us how to do flamenco dancing, boys were dancing with the girls. The boys were starting by playing the air guitar while on one knee. All the girls giggled and it was so fun. I hope we get to do it again.

For writing, we have been doing poetry. We are writing down ten different poems and putting them in a small little booklet to present to our classes, friends and family. Here are two examples of some of the poems that I have done

Ocean:

Waves, as gentle as the nice warm breeze

The peaceful sea, sounds calm and majestic

You can see the water constantly goes on, and never ends.

The water, shallow and vast

Fire

Dangerous, Awesome

Annoying, burning, blazing

Fire is so dangerous; it is so hot!
