A Warm Welcome to our Weeden Heights Community

Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

Weeden Heights PS is conducting the DET survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement.  We encourage all families to participate in this survey.  Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 15 August to Friday 16 September.  All families should have received an email from me on Tuesday with log on information.  If you would like to help out with completing a survey then please check your email.

Parent Workshop – Cyber Safety Presentation

On Tuesday 16 August, the school hosted a presentation by the ‘ThinkUknow’ organisation which was thought provoking and alarming as it covered essential information for every parent.  It was a little disappointing that only 14 families attended as this was information that every parent needs to be aware of to protect their children while on line.  In the changing online world, this workshop really is a must every year.  We truly have no idea what our children are doing on line however, with the right conversations we can learn and keep children safe.

Thanks to David Saville for organising this for our school community.  Many parents expressed how important this presentation was and were thankful for attending.  For those parents who did not attend, I strongly suggest taking a look at the website ThinkUKnow.  It will assist you in conversations that you need to have with your child.  From a school perspective, we definitely teach the students about how to be safe when on line.  What we do know is that schools and parents really need to work together to keep the children safe.

PFA Disco

Don’t forget that the disco is on tomorrow night.  It will be a sensational opportunity for our students to come together and have some fun through dancing, singing, eating and drinking.  We certainly know how to have fun at Weeden Heights and a massive thank you to our PFA for organising this event for our school.

Capital Works Update

In the next four weeks our school will be moving up to the top corridor, as explained in the last newsletter.  We have started to move items so some spaces are looking a little bare at the moment. It has been a great opportunity to have a good clean up and through out items we have been hoarding for a rainy day (and never used!).  We will be offering to the community some tables and chairs that may be perfect for your shed or cubby house etc.  Please look out for these in upcoming posts on School Stream or the newsletter.

We now have four companies interested in the contract for our upgrade so we will have builders in place soon ready to start in term 4.

As the admin server will be moved and it needs to be timed, the office will stay in the front office space for just a little longer.  It will then move to the library space once the server has been relocated. From then on, parents will enter the temporary office from the library courtyard.  We will put clear signage everywhere to make sure you can find us! We really don’t want anyone worried or to lose touch with us while we are in our temporary location.

It is getting exciting and I really would just like this project to start so we can have our new space as soon as possible.

Year 6-7 Transition

Parents of Year 6 students attending government schools have now received their placement offer letters for Year 7, 2023. If you have any questions about this process please contact Mrs Alter, our Year 6 to 7 Transition Coordinator.  I would like to thank Mrs Alter for the wonderful work she has done coordinating the process.

Book Week

Next week is Book Week!  Another chance for our school to dress up and have fun will be on Monday with the annual Book Week parade.  Please come along to assembly if you would like to take a look at the school in costume.  Don’t forget that we have Kelly Willson coming on Wednesday.  You will be able to purchase her books and have it signed while she is here which will be awesome.

Upcoming Professional Practice Days for Teachers.

For Semester 2, 2022, the Department of Education and Training has provided schools with the option to hold each teacher’s allocated professional practice day on the same day for all staff.  This is to enable the most effective and efficient use of this day and will assist as there is a shortage of replacement teachers.

As a result, we have scheduled our professional practice days for Tuesday 13 September and Monday 19 December.  These days were approved by School Council on Monday night but we wanted you to know as soon as possible so that you could mark these dates on your calendar.

Students will therefore not be required to attend school on this day.  We will be running OSHC on those days to support families.

Online Event

Don’t forget our online FAMILY MATHS NIGHT….Friday 1 September. Please make a note in your diaries as we would love to see you all involved.

Stay warm and well everyone!

Until next time……
