 Week 10 news

It feels like only yesterday that I arrived at Fitzroy Primary School and was so warmly welcomed by staff, students and families. Whilst it is a cliche, it is also true that the past 9 weeks have flown by. It has been a very busy Term 1 working through some challenges, but also celebrating many great successes.

We have enjoyed a wonderful Harmony Day celebration, acknowledging our strength in our diversity in our school. Our children had fun learning about rhythm during our African drumming session.

We had our spectacular Arts Show and Iftar/picnic dinner this week, coming together as a community to celebrate the arts and breaking bread together.

We successfully completed our first Term 1 NAPLAN assessment schedule, with our students trying their best throughout. We welcomed our new Foundation students to school and have seen them adjust well to school life. We have welcomed new families and new staff to our school this Term.

The George St building project is on schedule and is expected to be completed this year, providing a fantastic new learning space in 2024. Next Term there is a lot to look forward to, with excursions, camps, and many other outstanding experiences taking place for students in our school.

This week we held our first community event for the year and it was an amazing evening. The night began with our Arts Show taking place and it was a wonderful afternoon for our community. It was fantastic to see so many of our families attending the art show and enjoying our student art works from 2022 and this Term. It was great to see students taking pride while showing their parent/carer their artwork and then engaging in the workshop with Zeth from Yarra Services.

The mural painted by Ghost Patrol is a great addition to our school and adds a huge amount of life to the yard – a huge thank you goes to Ghost Patrol. Also, Bianca and Jacob for the organisation and donation of time. I would like to express gratitude and thanks on behalf of our community and myself to everyone involved in organising the Art Show, especially those parents/carers who came on Sunday to prepare the wall for the mural, those who helped put up the displays on Tuesday, and of course, to our amazing Art Teacher Leah.

The second part of Tuesday this week was also an amazing event and saw our community come together for a shared meal together. It was a very special evening and I was so happy to see fasting and non-fasting families sharing, talking, and enjoying a lovely time celebrating being a part of a diverse community. I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to Badria and Nurta for all of their work in organising the evening and to everyone who brought something to share and who joined our shared celebration.

Lastly, I am very happy to let the community know that Angela will be returning to school on Monday 1st May, which is week 2 of Term 2. I will be returning briefly for the first week of Term 2 from 24th to 28th April while Angela is on leave. Thank you to everyone for your support, warm welcome and thanks for having me in your school community throughout this Term. I have really enjoyed my time at Fitzroy Primary School and hopefully have been able to make a positive contribution to the school.

Staffing Update

I am delighted to share with the community the appointment of 3 new education support staff to our school.

· Julian Vescio who is coming on board as our new Business Manager

· Dursitu Mohammed who is a classroom integration aide

· Kim Crawford who is a classroom integration aide

We are still in the process of looking for a new PE teacher, and will continue to provide weekly PE classes through casual staff until then.
