Out and About

Year 9 LEAD Class

On 22 February, our group from the Year 9 LEAD class visited the Year 7 camp at Golden Valley Lodge.  We had the opportunity to run games for the kids and help with the camp activities.  We had spent all week in class, planning what we were going to do and what equipment we were going to use, so we really wanted everything to work. When the teachers got all the kids together, we were going over everything again last minute. However, we were lucky that the weather was great and so were the kids.  Some of the games we played with them included Clusters, Birds Nest, Birthday Line-up and Capture the Flag. It was amazing to meet all the new Year 7s and get to know them, and seeing what each student was interested in and what they enjoyed doing in their spare time.  It was fun playing with the Year 7s and they seemed to really enjoy the games we made.  The kids treated us all with respect, and that's all we could ask for.  This experience was great for developing our leadership skills such as courage, compassion, maturity and patience. Overall, it was an amazing experience and we had the best time.

Hands On Learning began at Frankston High School close to 20 years ago and has since helped thousands of students re-engage with school from Years 7-10.  Hands On Learning has recently merged with Save the Children Australia and is now run at close to 100 schools internationally.

We met with politicians, educational and community leaders to showcase and discuss how Hands On Learning improves the truancy and engagement of students in the classroom by providing an alternative community-based program within the school setting. Our government has committed to providing more funding which has concreted the program permanently in the Australian school system and opens up more potential for many more students to take part.  A great step forward.

Hands On Learning of Frankston High School would like to show their appreciation for the ongoing support of the leadership team and greater Frankston High School community.

Well done to all students involved in Hands On learning.
