Respectful Relationships

In term 2, all students at Clyde Primary School are learning about ‘Positive coping’ skills and ‘Problem Solving’ topics during their weekly Respectful Relationship’s lessons.

Key concepts taught within these topics consist of:

  • How to reflect on individual emotional responses
  • Discuss ways in which students can take responsibility for their actions
  • Describe ways to express emotions which show awareness of the feelings and needs of others
  • Practice techniques to deal with feelings of fear, frustration and anger
  • Recognise there are many ways to solve conflict
  • Describe similarities and differences in points of view between themselves and people in their communities
  • Identify cooperative behaviours in a range of group activities
  • Practise individual and group decision-making
  • Practise solving simple interpersonal problems.

EVIDENCE BASE:

Evidence shows that it is important to help students learn a range of problem-solving skills through applied learning tasks so they are able to cope with the challenges they will face in the future.  Problem solving is identified by the World Health Organisation as a key skill for health.  To be able to solve problems, children need to be able to think critically and evaluate the consequences of various actions.
