We have had quite a lot of events and activities happening over the past fortnight.

With Education Week happening this week, we saw a number of parents attend our Open Morning on Tuesday, despite the cold weather. It was lovely to walk around the school and see some familiar and new family faces playing maths games with their children in the classroom (please see following page for photos). Our Foundation students also confidently sang their pattern song at assembly on Monday morning, much to the delight of our audience.

Whilst our move into the new building has been delayed as it is not quite ready, we were excited to see today that work has begun in the old junior playground area at the front of the school. A new shaded play and outdoor learning space will take up most of this area. Fingers crossed, we will have access shortly, and I will continue to keep you updated.

Simultaneous Storytime

Next week, we have National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) on Wednesday morning.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 23rd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. In 2023, our students will take part in NSS by reading The Speedy Sloth with other classes.

Casey Netball Association visit

On Tuesday 9th May, students in Years 3-6 had Casey Netball come to our school and take each class through some skills, drills and game play with us. We learnt and built on our knowledge of the game, especially the rules and positions on court. We practised our footwork, passing and defence!

AFL Victoria visit

This week, AFL Victoria have been at our school taking students in year 3-6 through AFL skills, drills and modified games. We have practised our handballing, kicking and marking! This has been a great start to our AFL unit in PE.

Junior Sports Morning

On Thursday 18th May, we held our Junior School sports morning on our new Basketball courts. All the students got to participate in a number of different activities throughout the morning. They all had a great time, working together in their House teams, while trying new skills and having fun! Please enjoy the photos on our 'Junior Sports Morning' page of this newsletter.

Division Cross Country

On Wednesday 31st May, Kody H, Kody G, Dominic, Kael and Cody S will be competing at Division Cross Country at Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham. We all wish them all lots of luck and to run their best race!

Year 6 Fundraisers

Thank you to the families who supported our Year 6

Graduation fundraiser by buying a slinky apple over the past 2 weeks. They were a huge hit, and we raised a total of $184.50. Today, we had our free dress day and raised a grand total of $470!!

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for National Reconciliation Week remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Be a Voice’. During this week, staff will create lessons for our students to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

Curriculum Day

We have a Curriculum Day on Friday 2nd June. No students will attend on this day. If you require care for your children on this day, Team Kids will be running a full day program. Our staff will be using this day for assessment and reporting.

Whole School Production 2023 - 'Zoo Trouble'.

In Term 4, we are thrilled to announce that Clyde PS will be holding a whole school production in our gym for the first time.

Every student in our school will be involved, but split into two separate casts and two performances of our production titled 'Zoo Trouble'. Our performances will be Cast A on the 11th of October and Cast B on the 12th of October. Our scripts and cast list will be finalised by the end of this term. Your child will be receiving their script and costume requirements at the end of this term ready for the holidays.

The story takes place at a zoo which is falling apart and due to be closed. Upon hearing this news, the animals all decide that it is up to them to save the zoo. As the story progresses, we see an array of different species try to take it upon themselves to save the zoo. Will the animals succeed, or is the zoo doomed forever? Will they ever come together and realise the importance of team work to achieve their goal?

At Clyde Primary school we endeavour to provide as many rich and engaging events as we can. We know that drama education is proven to help build confidence and concentration. It helps develop language and communication skills as well as team building skills and leadership qualities. As well as being a fantastic community event, drama also helps our students develop their emotional intelligence.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Clyde Primary School is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Foundation to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

Students should have received their passwords in their reading diary. Parents are encouraged to log on to the PRC portal https://vprc.eduweb.vic.gov.au/home and record your child/ren’s books they’ve read at home. If you would prefer a paper checklist to record your child’s books, please see your child’s classroom teacher.

National Road Safety Week

Sunday 14th May to Sunday 21st May is National Road Safety Week. With City of Casey having 97 schools in our municipality and being a large community, we encourage parents and carers to drive safely around our school precinct.

Saturday's theme is promoting active travel (Share the path) and the theme on Sunday is take care on regional roads.

PLEDGE TO DRIVE SO OTHERS SURVIVE

I pledge to drive as if my loved ones are on the road ahead.

I will remove all distractions and never use my mobile phone while driving.

I will not put other people at risk by speeding, driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

I will protect all vulnerable road users, especially those whose job places them in harm’s way, by slowing down and giving them the space they need to be safe.
