Junior School

A highlight of this week was participating in the National Simultaneous Storytime. All across Australia children stopped and listened to a reading of ‘The Speedy Sloth’ by Rebecca Young and illustrated by Heath McKenzie. Our students loved the story, highlighting themes around well being such as resilience, and completed activities about the book too. Our Springwood and Wentworth Falls campuses have copies of the book which the children might borrow and show to their parents.

This event reminds us to slow down and share good literature with children. Mrs Verhoven and Miss Wells love to share quality literature with our students and they always have a long wish list of books to buy for the Library! Mrs Fox runs a “Book Club” at Wentworth Falls, and some of our Year 4 children run a Library Club at Springwood. Encouraging children to read with their parents, and on their own as they get more independent are key goals in the Junior School. We look forward to celebrating Book Day in Term 3 and will be celebrating all things reading at that time!

Over the last few days, Stage 2 children have learned about History by engaging with the history of our school. Both classes visited Coorah House and learned all about the long, 105 year history of the school and how children have learned at Grammar over that time.

Our students loved hearing stories told by Mrs Plummer and they loved playing old fashioned games like marbles. I’m not sure how much they loved the challenge of writing with ink in fancy cursive! Thank you to Mrs Plummer for hosting the children and for bringing the history of our school alive for them.
